Be it known that I, DEAN A. BECKWITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan,
in the county and State of New York, have` invented a new and I mproved File or Drawer Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to casings for containing files, drawers, and the like; and its object is to provide a new and improved file or drawer lock arranged to securely lock all the les or drawers in position in the casing at the same time or to unlock all the files or drawers for convenient removal of the same `at once to give access to their contents.
Theinvention consists of' novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a sectionalperspective view of the improvement as applied to a casing containing document-files. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional front elevation of the improvement on the line 2 2 in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4; is a sectional side elevation of one end of the pivoted rock-bar and the bearing thereof, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the casing with the lock for the rock-shaft.
The casing A, on which the improvement is applied, is arranged to contain files, drawers, or like devices, and each such device is provided at .its rear end with an angular catch C, adapted to be engaged by a lock-bar D, preferably made of invertedU shape in crosssection similar to channel-iron and provided at its ends with trunnions D, engaging bearings E, secured to the sides of the casing A, as is plainly shown in Figs. l and 4, so that the bar D can oscillate on the trunnions to engage the front vertical portion of the lockbar with the catches C of the several shelves or other devices to lock the same against removal from the casing. or other devices become unlocked and can be conveniently removed by the operator from the casing in order to gain access to their con- In order to impart the desired swinging movement to the lock-bar D', the following device is provided: A vertically-disposed slide F passes through the lock-bar D near the front edge thereof, and on the slide are secured pins F', bearing on the top and bottom of the lock-bar D, so that when the slide is moved up or down a swinging movement is given to the lock-bar as the pins F carry the lock-bar along during the up-and-down movement of the slide F. On theslide F is formed or secured an enlarged portion F2, (see Figs. 2 and 3,) and this enlargedportion is mounted to slide vertically in a suitable bearing G, secured in any desired manner to the casing A. In the enlarged portion F2 is formed an elongated slot F3, engaged by the Wrist-pin H of a crank-disk H, secured to the inner end of a lock-shaft I, extending transversely, the inner end being journaled in a bearing G and the outer end on a suitablepart A' of the casing A. (See Fig. l.)
`On the outer end of the lock-shaft I is secured a handle J under the control of the operator for turning said lock-shaft and causing the crank-disk H to impart an up-anddown swinging motion to the enlarged portion F2, and consequently to the slide F, so
that the desired rocking motion is given to the lock-bar D for locking or unlocking the shelves B or other devices contained in the casing A. The lock-shaft I is adapted to be looked against movement at the time the lock-bar D engages the catches C, and for this purpose an ordinary lock K is employed, secured to the part A of the casing and so arranged that the bolt moves in engagement with a iiattened portion I' on the lock-shaft I, so as to hold the latter against turning at the time the bolt is shot out.
From the foregoing it is evident that the lock-shaft I engages the slide F and the latter imparts a rocking motion to the lock-bar D, so that the several files or similar devices contained in the casin g A are simultaneously lOO locked or unlocked, according to the direction in which the operator turns the handle J'. The device is very simple and durable in construction, is not liable to get out of order, and can be readily applied to any casing and can be cheaply manufactured. f
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A file or shelf lock, comprising a U- shaped lock-bar hung on pivots and adapted to receive in its channel upward catches on the movable files or shelves, and mechanism forswinging said lock-bar on its pivots.
2. A file or shelf lock, comprising a lockbar hung on pivots and having parallel down- \\ardly-projecting flanges forming between them a channel adapted to receive upward catches on the movable files or shelves, and mechanism for swinging said lock-bar on its pivots.
3. A file or shelf lock, comprising a lockbar pivotally mounted to swing about a horizontal axis and provided with a slot running toward said axis,and an operating-bar mounted to slide vertically and extending through the slot of the lock-bar, said operating-bar being provided both above and below the lock-bar, with projections engaging the saine.

A file or shelf lock, comprising a lock bar mounted to swing about a horizontal axis and arranged to engage catches on the files or shelves, and a vertically-movable operating-bar extending loosely through the lockbar at a distance from its axis and having operative engagement with said lock-bar.
5. A le or drawer lock, comprising a channel-iron lock-bar adapted to engage angular catches on liles or movable shelves, trunnions atthe 'ends of said lock-bar, fixed bearings engaged by said trunnio'ns, a slide having pins engaging the top and bottom of said lock-bar, a crank-disk having its wrist-pin engaging a slot in said slide, and a rock-shaft having a handle and carrying said crankdisk, as set forth.
