Ta all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES SERRILL, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful toy called The Magic Savings-Bank; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, inl which- Figures'l and 2 are vertical transverse sections of a bureau having my said invention applied thereto.

Like letters of reference indicate the same parts when in both iigures. l

The object of this toy is to amuse little children, and also tdinduce them to save their loose pennies.

My invention onsists, substantially as hereinafter described, in the application, to any suitablecase or bureau, of a drawer provided with va tilting bottom, which, when the drawer is pulled outward, or opened, appears like the usual fast or stationary bottom of a drawer, but when it is pushed inward, or closed, the said bottom tilts, and thus causes any penny or pennies which may have been dropped 'into the drawer, when it was open, to slide and drop down into a ilexibl'e receptacle in the case, from which the said deposit cannot be taken out without rst withdrawing a secretly-detachable bottom of the said case.

Referring to the drawings- A B is the enclosing case;

C, the money-drawer, with its tilting bottom c',-

D, the flexible receptacle;

a, the secretly-detachable bottom of the case; and

b b, supplementary drawers, of the ordinary kind.

The tilting bott-om c', of the drawer G, is suspended from the two inner and opposite sides-of the latter by means of two respective j ournal-pins` near the Vforward part of the drawer, as indicated by the dotted circle 2; and the rear part of the said bottom being therefore the wider or heavier, tends to tilt downward when unsupported, as indicated in` iig. 1, but when the said drawer C is drawn outward, the tilted bottom comes in contaotwith and slides on` a iixedv compressible bar or spring, 3, which, thus reacting, raises the bottom, c', to

its horizontal or closed position in the drawer O, and keeps it thus firmly closed up in place, as represented in tig. 2, a small stop-bar, 4, preventing the drawer from being vdrawn so far outward as would release the said bottom from the pressure of the spring.

Behind the lower drawers b b", there is a distinct space, or chamber, 5, which extends from one side to the other of the case A B, and contains the ilexible or soft receptacle D, the upper edge of which is fastened around to the chamber 5, so as to form an open-mouthed pendent, trough-like bag, which also opens against the Y n ends of thecase A B, so as to allow of the removal ofthe deposits when the slide a is withdrawn for the purpose.

Whenever the drawer O is pushed fully inward, an open communication is produced between it and the open mouth'of the receptacle D, by the tilting of the bottom, c', as indicated in iig. 1, and consequently any penniesthat may be ou the said bottom, c', will slide down and drop into the receptacleD; and, on' again opening the said drawer, its bottom, c', will be found closed up in place as' before, but the money gone, as if by magic.

The secretly-adjustable bottom, af, of the case A B, slides tightly in grooves in the latter, and appears to be immovable, but, nevertheless, is made so that it can be drawn forcibly out at the back part of the case, so as to allow the contents of the receptacle D to be taken out by any one having due knowledge, and authority given for the purpose.

Having thus fully described my invention,

- What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is conned to the following, viz:

I claim a toy, consisting 0f a suitable case AB, provided with a drawer, O, having a tilting bottom, c', and operating in combination with the receptacle D, or its equivalent, in the said case, substantially in the manner described, for the purposes specied.
