JOHN PRIEST, OF GRADYVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WORK-CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,771, dated February 13, 1894.
Application filed June 7, 1893. Serial No. 476.877. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PRIEST, of Gradyvillein the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Work-Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in work cabinets, and it is especially directed to the provision of an improved-mechanism for locking the several drawers when the top or lid of the cabinet isclosed, as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved cabinet shown partly in section. Fig. 2, is a front elevation of the same, a portion of the cabinet side being broken away in order to disclose the drawer locking mechanism.
A designates the supporting base and B the cabinet proper having pivot O projecting from its lower side which enters a suitably formed socket in the upper end of the standard, thus making the cabinet revoluble in either direction upon its support.
D are drawers for the accommodation of thread or other articles, which drawers enter the cabinet from opposite sides, as shown, so that when entirely pushed in their adjacent ends are quite close together, but sufficient room is left between them to accommodate the bolts E, which extend vertically through the cabinet, resting at their lower ends upon the springs F, as shown in Fig. 1. A narrow longitudinal space is left between the upper and lower drawer series and also between the upper drawers and the bottom Gr of the large compartment H in the upper end of the cabinet, and extending laterally in these transverse spaces and over the rear edges of the respective drawers are the angular arms or lugs I which are held normally raised from engagement with the said drawer ends by the spring upon which the rod rests. The upper end or top of the .cabinet is provided with a hinge lid J, having blocks of rubber, or metal, K set therein which engage the upper ends of rods E when the said lid is lowered, thus pushing downward the said rods and engaging the arms or lugs I, with the rear ends of the drawers thus. preventing them from being withdrawn, as will be readily understood. The lid J may then be locked in any preferred manner and thus it will be seen that the cabinet is rendered inaccessible without first releasing or unlocking the said hinged lid. As soon as the lid is raised the springs force up the locking rods E, thus releasing the several drawers. The blocks K set into the lid prevent the latter from wearing at the point where the bolt ends come in contact therewith.
The space in the upper portion or top of the cabinet may be used conveniently for depositing work and from the above it will be seen that when the lid is lowered and properly secured the drawers will also be automatically locked and access thereto be cutoff to all persons, excepting those who can unlock the lid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a casing, two series of drawers therein, rods for engaging the drawers which extend vertically behind the same, and a spring formed of ilat metal secured between its ends to the casing and operating at its ends the said rods, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. f Y
JOHN PRIEST.
