Description

(No Model.)
No. 368,697. Patented Augy2'3, 1887.
I FTII; -p] PE 1 $11 i? 1" L I LA' 1 I m l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. WVOLLENSAK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOCK FOR DRAWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,697, dated August 23, 1887.
Application filed September 27, 1886. Serial No. 214,676. (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, JOHN EWOLLENsAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Looks for Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
In the drawings, Figure lis a side elevation ofa chest of drawers provided with my improved locking device, with the drawers unlocked. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the lock thrown and the drawers locked. Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on the line a: mof Fig. 2, showing the mechanism of the device in operative position; and Fig. 4 is a broken perspective view of the vertically-sliding bar.
In the drawings, A is the drawer-locking bar; B, a common drawer-lock; O, the bolt of such look; 1), slots in the locking-bar; E, pins or bolts which pass through the slots D and hold the locking-bar in place, and F leaves or projections on the locking-bar which project over the edge of the drawers when locked.
My invention is intended to be used on bureaus, desks, escritoires,or wherever a number of drawers are used in series; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple means for quickly and securelylocking all the drawers ofa series with a single key, thereby avoiding the annoyance and expense of a separate lock and key for each drawer.
In applying my invention the locking-bar A is movably fastened to the vertical partition between the drawers, where two rows are used, by means, preferably, of the bolts E, which pass through the slots D, and are provided with heads to hold the locking device in place, and to the frame, where only one row is used. Under the end of the locking-bar isa common drawer-lock, B, so arranged that when the key is turned the bolt 0 will raise the locking-bar, and thereby bring the leaves or projections, whether one or more, up to a positionin front of the drawers to prevent their being opened, as shown in Fig. 2. The upright bar and leaves F should not be wider than the vertical partition and horizontal cross pieces or sills, so that when unlocked, as shown in Fig. 1,the drawers may be freely opened. I
What Ielaim as new, and desire to secure &
by Letters Patent, is-
In a drawer-locking device, the combination of avertical external sliding bar provided with lateral projection or projections moving in front of the drawers, and a lock throwing out an ordinary key-lock bolt to vertically move the sliding bar and bring the projection or projections opposite the face of the drawers to lock the same, substantially'as described.
