Description

Patented Apr. 28, 1885.
RM 6 J T wwlexbmw;
UNITED Sra'rns MELVIN BANCROFT, OF WHITESTOWN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR 'IO' WV. B. QUIGLEY & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR A SERIES OF DRAWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,596, dated April 28, 188 5.
Application'filcd March 5, 1884.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MELVIN BANOROFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVhitestown, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new. and useful Combination Ghiffonier-Look, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in a lock, the object of which is to lock a number of drawers by operating one lock and key.
Figure l is a perspective View of one corner of a chiffonier or case of drawers, with one drawer partly open and the rest of the drawers entirely removed. The front corner or side facing is represented as broken away in several places to show portions of the invention in their position behind it. The open drawer shows the notch in the lower side of one end that receives the drawer-catch in looking the drawer. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective front view of the improvement, showing the lock combined with lockbar and catches. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective back view of the improvement, showing the lock combined with lock-bar and catches. Fig. 4 is a sec tional top plan view ofone corner of the frames or divisions between the drawers of a chiffonier or case of drawers, showing the grooves or mortises in the division-rails through which the lock-bar and catches of the improvement operate.
A is the lock-it may be any ordinary lock in general use adapted to this positionwhich is secured to the back side of the side facing, B, a keyhole, 0, being cut through the side facing, B. The look A may be placed at the most convenient point on the side facing, 13, to suit the maker.
D is a movable upright bar, and may be of .wood, iron, or other suitable material, extend ing from below the bottom of the lowest drawer to the bottom of the top drawer desired to be locked, and moves freely in grooves E in division-rails F, behind side facing, B, in any piece of furniture in which it is used. The movable upright bar D is provided with horizontal drawer-catches G, which are attached (No model.)
t0 the upright bar D by screws or rivets, or may be made solid with the bar, if both bar and catches are made of metal. The drawercatches G should be made nearly as wide as the division-rails F are thick, and attached to upright bar D at such distances apart as the width of the drawers may require.
In upright bar D is a notch, H, which receives a spur, I, thrown out from or attached to lock-bolt J. By means of this spur I the movement of the lock-bolt J, when operated by the key, is communicated to the upright bar D with its drawer-oatches G, causing them to move up and down simultaneous with the lock-bolt J. \Vhile the drawers are unlocked the drawer-catches G remain in the grooves E in division'rails F, allowing the drawers to move out and in freely.
When the drawers are closed and desired to be locked, the key of the look A is turned, by means of which the upright bar D is raised, bringing its drawer-catches G partly out of the grooves E and into the drawernotch K. The drawer-catches G, remaining partly in the grooves E and partlyin the drawer-notches K, afford a strong resistance and secure perfectly-locked drawers by the turning of one key. At the same time the upright bar D is relieved from any strain whatever, leaving only those functions for it to perform for which it is intendedviz., to raise and lower the drawer-catches G.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination. with the frame of a furniture structure and drawers located therein and having notches in their side of alock having the bolt of the same provided with a spur extending to one side, a bar located in a vertical recess in the frame, having catches engaging the notches in the drawers and having an opening engaging the spur of the lockbolt, as and for the purpose set forth.
MELVIN BANCROFT.
