Description

J. B. MOR RIS. Fastener for Meeting Rails of Sashes.
No. 205,568. Patented July 2,1878
N.PE|ERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHKNGTOM D, 0.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. MORRIS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,568, dated July 2, 1878; application filed June 8, 1378.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN B. IVIORRIS, of Gincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Sash Lock or Fastening, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improved eon struction of those devices for fastening together the meeting-rails of window-sashes in which a horizontally-swinging latch upon the uppermost rail of the lower sash is caused to e11- gage under or interlock with a spur or prong upon the lowermost rail of the upper sash.
My invention consists in the peculiar combination of devices for locking the sashes together, which is hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my sash-fastening in its locked, and Fig. 2 top view of the same in its unlocked, condition. Fig. 3 is a section in the line a: an
A and B may, respectively, represent pon tions of the meeting-rails of a lower and of an upper sash. A plate, 0, secured by woodscrews D to the top of the lower sash, has exteiulingupward from it a stud, E, upon which turns the latch-bar F. This bar has such length rearward as to be capable of engaging under the customary catch or spur G on the upper sash, and has the usual lip f for engagement behind said spur. The front extremity of said bar has hinged to it a prolongation, H, on which is a knob or handle, I,
like that which is customarily provided upon the bar itself. The front edge of the plate 0 is made rounding and somewhat drooping, as represented, and has in it a square notch, c, of such depth and width as to easily receive the hinged pendant or prolongation H whenever the bar is brought round to the locking position. A stump, D, upon the plate 0 serves as a stop to limit the sweep of the bar F in unlocking.
I have selected, to illustrate my invention, theforni of sash-fastenin g actually constructed by me; but I reserve the right to vary the same in non-essential particulars. For example, that side of the notch 0 toward which the bar F swings (in the present illustration the left side) may be omitted, and any customary or approved form may be given to the rear extremity of the bar F and to the spur G.
I claim- The improved sash lock or fastening comprising notched or shouldered plate 0 c, havin g stud E and stump D, the swinging latchbar F, having lip f, and hinged pendant H I, all upon the lower sash, and catch or spur G upon the upper sash, substantially as represented and described.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
- JOHN B. MORRIS.
