JAMES PORTER MAGINNIS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
LOCKING-BAR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 719,351, dated January 27, 1903. Application filed April 18, 1902. Serial No. 108K545. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES PORTER MAGIN- N18, 2. subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking-Bars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a looking-bar for use in fastening baskets, mail-bags, and simi lar articles, so as to prevent the contents thereof from being stolen or otherwise handled by unauthorized parties.
The principal object of my invention is to produce a neat, simple, strong, and efficient form of locking-bar, which may be inserted through a series of loops or rings and then looked in such position as to prevent its withdrawal therefrom.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure shows the preferred form of my device.
The tubular member is provided with a slot 16 and with a pivot 17, upon which a hasp 18, having the general form of a bellcrank, is mounted and free to rock. This hasp is provided with a beveled surface 19 and is so disposed that one of its arms 20 may be brought into the position indicated in full lines. The bolt 21, provided with the bevel 22, is slidably mounted in the lock 23 and controlled by a key to be inserted through the keyhole 4.
To use the device, a key is inserted in the keyhole 4:, the bolt 21 is withdrawn by the action of the key, and the hasp is swung into the position indicated by dotted lines. The casing 23 is now used as a handle, and the of a key, shot into the position shown by full lines, thus holding the hasp in the position indicated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A locking-bar comprising a longitudinal tubular member provided at one of its ends with'a casing, locking mechanism mounted within said casing, a hasp pivotally secured upon said tubular member and spaced asunder from said casing, said hasp being provided with an arm to be engaged by said looking mechanism.
2. A locking-bar comprising a longitudinal tubular member provided at one of its ends with a casing, locking mechanism mounted within said casing and provided with a bolt, and a hasp having the general form of a bellcrank and pivoted upon said tubular mem ber at a point spaced asunder from said casing, said hasp being normally free to rock, the arrangement being such that said hasp may be engaged by said bolt and thereby rigidly secured in a predetermined position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES PORTER MAGINNIS.
