Letters Patent No. 68,378, dated September 3, 1867.
IMPROVED WASHING MACHINE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LEWIS MERRIFIELD, of La Grange Centre, in the county of La Grange, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and improved Washing Machine for washing clothes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a side and top view of the machine.
Figure 2 is a view of the rolling wash-board.
Similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the two figures.
To enable persons to fully understand my machine and improvement, I will describe its construction and operation. I
H H represents the body of the machine in fig. 1, ready for use. I I represent the legs to support the machine. D D D represent a movable frame inside of the body of the machine, hung on pivots at A A at one end of the machine. The other end of said frame can be raised or lowered, and sustained in position by means of catches or other equivalents fastened to the frame D to catch in the notches E, therebeing similar notches on opposite sides of the machine. B B, fig. 1, are grooved rollers. Said rollers are hung on .pivots or bearings inside the frame D. K KK in fig. 2 represents the washboard,having O O or projections on the under side, for the purpose of rubbing the clothes. L L, fig. 2, is a cross-bar, with bearings on each end to work in grooves C C. T is the handle to work the machine by. The machine is extremely simple, and can be constructed at a. small cost, and is efficient and useful.
What I claim as my invention, is
The combination and arrangement of the frame D, grooved rollers 13 B, rubber K, and tub H, with the springs and catches E, all as and for the purpose specific LEWIS MERRI-F-IELD.
