m5 wear/t may saucepan:
Be it known that .1, WELL: s FRANKLIN COLE, of Waco, i t.-e eousty-cf EdcLennen and State of Texas have invested a new and useful improvement Cartridges for Goes, of which the following is a specification.
l have obtained Letters Petest No. 671,877, dated Aoril 9, 1901, for aprojectiie having elliptical crcss-seotioe and slight iongitudinal twist for use in gene provided with v a. corresponding bore. When the garojectile is inserted in the breeoo manually, it is easily slated, so es to insure its due presentetion ire/vent jamming, which would oc-' out if its transverse axes were not in eoiscidemo with those of the gonsloore. guns provided with for insertion of certridges by action of a lever, slidisg bolt, and supplemental devices, see as is. the Mauser, Kreg-Eorgensen, and other allied magazine types, it is necessary to so construct the eartridge proper and to provide the guwbreecli with such guides as will insure the due presentetios of the projectile for insertion, so that jamming will be prevented. l have filed an application for eatent for en improve ment in guns embodying guides of this charester, and my present invention relates to the 'oertridge adapted for use therewith.
In the aceompanying drawings, Figure 1 is e perspective View of e bell-cartridge em: hedging myinvention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of he seine. Fig. 3 is a cross-seetion on line 2. Fig. 4. is a plan View of a pertioe oi gun orovided with oartridgeguides.
Figs, 5.221; 6 are vertical cross-sections on uses e 5 and 8 6, respectively, of Fig. 4.
,sertion in the gun-bore c.
The cartridge a is chiefly distinguished by the form of its head-that is to say, the rim or flange 1) thereof is cut away at two points or on diametrically opposite sides, thus form inp; two straight parallel portions which serve as contact and guiding surfaces when the cartridge is being forced forward for ingun-breeoi and 01 the cartridge 0; therewith is illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, and 6. Thefeees of the guide-ribs 03 have a, twist or transverse inclination corresponding to that of the bore 0, so that the cartridge is turned or rotated slightly on its axis While being pushed forward into the bore. Thus the due presentation of the elliptical projectile or hell 6 is inv sored and jamming of the same in the here is effectually prevented. The front orreduced end f of the cartridge is elliptieal-and twisted, corresponding to the projeotile and gun-bore, as shown in Figs. 1, 2. and 3.
While the cartridge is preferably provided with two opposite flattened sides, I do not limit myself thereto, since it is Within the scope of m T invention to employ but one each side.
What I claim is- A cartridge having its reduced end. twisted and formed as an ellipse in cross-section and its flanged head provided with sides as shown and described.
