CHARLES M. WILSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HAL T0 JOHN L. WILSON, OF PITMAN, NEW JERSEY.
SPIRAL EYE-SCREW DRIVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 6, 1909.
Patented Feb. 21, 1911. Serial no. 531,670.
To all whom it "may concern:
lie it known thatl, Ciununs M. VILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at l-hihulclphia. in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spiral Eye-Screw Drivers, of which the following: is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in spiral eye-screw drivers, the object of the invention being to provide a bit designed for use in spiral screw drivers, which is espe- 'l:tll adapted tor holding various sizes of lyre-screws; which is magnetized so as to hold the eye-screw while being positioned, and which can be rapidly operated by the spiral screw driver to screw the eye-screw into place.
'ith these and other objects in view the invent-ion consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts. as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig; 2 is an enlarged view in elevation of my improved bit. Fig. 3 is a view in elcvationat right angles to Fi 2. and Figs. 4 is a view in section of the bit.
1 represents an ordinary spiral screw driver, and 2 my improved bit which is made with a tenon 0 at one end to look within the spiral screw driver, as is custolnary with bits for this class of screw drivers.
My improved bit, from a point about midway its ends, gradually increases in diameter, being circular in cross section throughout, and in its larger free end is provided with a recess 4, said recess having side walls 5, 5, connected by a curved wall 6, which latter is not curved in the arc of a circle, but its side portions are preferably straighter, or of greater arcs than the inner end portion, so as to more effectually accommodate ditllerent sizes of screw-eyes, illustrated at 7. By referring particularly to Fig. 4, it will be noted, as shown in full lines. ho 1 a larger size of screw-eye is accommodated within the recess 4, and in dotted lines, how a smaller size of screw-eye is tICCOllllllOtltllctl, this being due to the general shape of the recess. The side Walls 5 of recess 4: taper toward each other from their outer to their inner ends, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, so that the greater the pressure on the, screw eye, the tighter will be the clamping" action on the same.
The bit 2 is magnetized so that it will, by magnet-ism, hold the screw-eye in the recess 4, and permit the screw driver to be manipulated, so as to position the screweye whenever desired, and then when the screw driver is operated, the screw-eye will 65 be driven into place.
lty reason of the shape of the bit, that is, to gradually increase in diameter from apoint about midway its ends, gives to the bit great strength, and the recess in the end dces not materially weaken the same.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing); from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth) but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A bit of the character described, having an enlarged outer end and an elongated recess in said end, the side walls of said recess extending parallel from the end of the bit inwardly for a short distance, and then inclining toward each other, the end walls of said recess inclining, in straight lines toward each other from the outer end of the 9( bit for the greater portion of their length, and then connected by a curved wall, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 95 two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES M. WILSON.
