NEEDLE.
Specication of Letters Patentl I Patented Dec. 26, 1911.
Application led October 20, 1910'. Serial No. 588,126.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. VOGEL- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New'York, have inventedcertain new and useful lmpi'ovements. in Needles; and Ido declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art t0 which it' appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in needles.
The object of the invention is to provide v Ufa needle of this character having an improved construction of thread attaching mechanism whereby the thread may be engaged with the needle when the 'latter' is held in any position.' Y
Another object is to provide a needle of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, eiicient and reliable in operation and well adapted to the'purpose for which it isdesigned.
l With these and other objects in View, th invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange-` ment of parts as will be -more fullydescribed and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
`fIn the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a needle constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is also a side viewof the needle viewed from the-side -of the same; Fig. 3 is a viewon the line 3-3 of Fig. l1 looking in the opposite direction..
Fig. 4 is also a transverse sect-ion taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 denotes the body portion ofthe needle which may be of -the usual or any desired construction and on the larger endpof theneedle is formed a reduced shank or exten` sion 2. The shank 2 is preferably of square or rectangular form incross section and where the same joins the body of the needle a shoulder i's formed as shown. 0n the outer end ofthe shank 2 and extending inwardly with which the thread is engaged.' When the thread is" thus engaged with said tapered spaces 4 it is `drawn back into the narrowy portion of the spaces and caught or gripped by the jaws 3 which securel hold'the thread while the needle is being sed. nAs clearly the needle, whereby the latter may be read-l ily drawn through the fabric to be operated 65 upon. By forming the thread gripping jaws in the manner described the thread may be engaged with and secured to either ,one
or both of the jaws irrespective of the position in which the needle is held.
- -From the foregoing description "taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the shown "the outer edges of the jaws 4 are substantially on a line of the jaw portion l of invention will be readily understood without I 'requiring a more extended.l explanation.
.Various changes in the form,'proportion and the minor details of construction may' :be resorted .to without r departing from -the principle -or sacrificing anyl ofthe advan tages of this invention as defined in the ap-f pende'd claim.
Having thus I clain is:
A needle having a reduced flat shank, a pair of oppositely disposed rigid thread receiving jaws formed on the opposite edges 'of the shank, the ends of said jaws project- Aing toward the bo'dy portion of the needle,
the inner thread directing edges of which 'are inclined, the outer edges of said jaws be- Aing substantially on a line with the -body .portion of the needle.
,In testimony whereof I have hereunto s et my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
