Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEroE.
EMIL L. HERB/MANN, OF AMHERST, NEBRASKA.
TATTINGr-SHUTTLE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL L. I-IEREMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amherst, in the county of Buffalo, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tatting-Shuttles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled Y. but which can be readily withdrawn by releasing the holding means.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. r
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of a shuttle made in accordance with my invention, Fig.V 2 is a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal lsection on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a section similar to Fig. 2 showing the spring depressed.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the body of the shuttle which is hollow, and has a tapered end 11 and an open end 12 reduced to provide* a shoulder- 13. Onto this end is engaged a cap 14 having its opposite end tapered in a manner similar to the end 1 1. Formed in one side of the body Vis a longitudinal slot 15 which begins at the shoulder Vopening 16, one-half of the opening extending Vinto the thicker part of the body, while Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Application filed August 24, 191-5. Serial No. 47,105.
the other half is formed in the reduced open end. Formed in the open end of the cap is a notch 17 which registers with the portion of the opening 16 in the reduced end of the body. Disposed within the body and secured adjacent the inner end of the slot 15 is a leaf spring 18 which extends longitudinally under the slot and is provided with a button 19 extending outwardly through the said opening 16. A bobbin 2O is adapted to be illed with thread in the bobbin Winder of a sewing machine and then placed in the shuttle.
In filling the shuttle, the spring 18 is depressed by pushing down the button 19, and then inserting through the slot 15 a piece of thread, after which one end of this piece of thread is attached to the end of the thread on the bobbin. The bobbin is then inserted in the shuttle and the cap slipped into place. The spring is again depressed and the piece of thread to which the bobbin thread is attached pulled up through the slot so that the knot is on the outside.
Vhat is claimed is:
A tatting shuttle comprising a hollow body formed with a reduced open end which results in a circumferential shoulder, said body having a longitudinal slot opening through the shoulder where it is formed into a semi-circular recess, a removable cap engaged on the reduced end, a leaf spring secured within the body and extending longitudinally 'under the slot, and a button carried by the free end of the spring and extending through the recess, said cap having a semi-circular recess formed on its inner end for partially surrounding the said button.
i In testimony whereof, I aix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
