This invention relates to improved shuttles or bobbins and more particularly to tatting shuttles. V

The objectof the invention is to improve, simplify and cheapen shuttles of this character, as well as to provide a novel connection between portions thereof whereby they may be conveniently separated but held sufficiently tight to prevent accidental separation or displacement thereof.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the peculiar combination and arrangement of parts to be here-- inafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed, it being also an object to provide a device which is simple in constructi n, durable and efiicient.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in whichsimilar haracters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shuttle or bobbin constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.

As illustrated, the improved tatting shuttle or bobbin consists of two opposed shells or elongated and oppositely tapered plates.

5 and 6, said shells or plates being provided with means to detachably connect them so as to permit them to be separated for conveniently winding the thread or cord thereon but to prevent accidental separation or displacement of the shells or plates with respect to each other.

For the above purpose, the shell or plate 5 is provided with an elongated sleeve extension projecting laterally from the central portion thereof and shaped similarly in cross section to the shape of the plate in plan. This sleeve is provided with a slot 8 adjacent'to one of its tapered ends, said slot extending partly into the sleeve as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The other shell or plate is provided with a laterally extended elongated sleeve 9 which isof larger circumference or size than the sleeve 7 so as to snugly receive the latter therein in telescopic relation and frictionally hold the parts together, while the slot 8 permits the sleeve 7 to be expanded so as to vary its size to insure the proper friction to hold theparts together and prevent accidental separation or displacement thereof. The sleeves together produce an intermediate reduced portion or spool between the shells or plates but this is further provided for by the provision of a flange. 10 at the free end of the sleeve 9 which is substantially diamondshaped in plan and which is also provided with an opening or aperture 11 for the purpose of inserting the thread and anchoring the end thereof between the flange and the shell or'pla-te 5 when starting or winding the thread or material on the shuttle or bobbin.

From the foregoing it will be seen that each shell or plate is thus provided with a hollow tube, the two projecting, in opposite directions to be telescoped together so that by removing one side, that is, the plate or shell 5 and its tube, the shuttle can be filled or wound with the thread or material much faster and easier than ordinary shuttles, by holding the shell or plate 6 in one hand and winding the thread or material with the other, while the flange 10 prevents displacement thereof from the tube 9. The slot permits expansion or contraction of the tubular extension 7 whereby it will be caused to properly engage the interiorwall of the tube or tubular extension 9 to posi-,

tively hold the parts together when engaged with one another to cause the plates or shells to meet at their ends as is more particularly shown in Fig. 1.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is a 1. A tatting shuttle or bobbin,'comprising two elongated plates having tapering ends, each plate having a tubular extension adapted to telescope, the tubular extensions being of a shape in cross section similar to the shape of the plates and one of the said extensions being slotted.
