Description

. 3EST AVAILABLE COP (No Model.) W. W. LUYSTER.
HAND GRENADE EXTINGUISHER N0. 338,604. Patented Mar. 23, 1886.
, INVE TO 2 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM XV. LUYSTER, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
HAND-GRENADE EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,604, dated March 23, 1886.
Application filed December '7, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. LUYSTER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grenades for Extinguishing Fire, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in improvements in grenades to be employed in extinguishing fire; and it consists in recessing the corks or stoppers thereof to receive an explosive to be ignited from the exterior to destroy the grenade and liberate the extinguishing material therein, as will be hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical central section of a fragment of an ordinary destructible grenade, A,with my improvement applied thereto. Fitted to the neck B of this grenade is a cork, L, having a central recess to contain an explosive, C, and a fuse, D, by which the grenade is to be destroyed to liberate the extinguishing material contained therein to extinguish fire. By this construction the explosive, being on the exterior of the grenade, is entirely separate from the extinguishing fluid therein, and consequently not liable to become deteriorated thereby.
The object of this invention is to produce a Serial No. 184,938. (No model.)
grenade for extinguishing fire, that may be prepared for use and remain an indefinite length of time without deterioration. By this construction it will be understood that the corks may be removed for transportation and inserted at any convenient time. I
Aside from the certainty of destroying the grenade to liberate the extinguishing material therein, when thrown into a fire, this grenade may be produced at a trifling expense above a grenade constructed in the usual manner without this additional means of destroying it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new and improved article of manufacture, a cork or stopper for bottles or vessels which contain extinguishing matter to extinguish fire, provided with a recess or recesses to receive and hold fulminate or other suitable explosive material to destroy the vessel and liberate the extinguishing material, constructed substantially as herein described and shown.
