UNITEDv STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- HIRAM BURTON SMITH, SR., OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
BOOK-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N O. 682,761, dated September 1'7, 1901.
Application tiled October 23,1900. Serial No. 341100. (N0 model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIRAM BURTON SMITH, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Rests or Holders, the following being a full, clear, and exactdescript-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters Vmarked hereon, which form a part of this specificaion.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in book rests or holders, the object being to provide a simple, cheap,
l and effective device whereby a book or other Object may be supported at either of two inclinations, the means for supporting the book having attached thereto a clamp for securing the book-holder to a desk, table, or other Object.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view Of a book-holder constructed in accord with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, the section being taken beyond the base and through the sides of the :metal end pieces. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view On the lines 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The base C may be made up from a rectangular strip, which is provided centrally with a longitudinal recess shaped to provide inclined bearing-faces,which are at different inclinations, and below the same an undercut recess, the angular sides being odset from the walls of the recess above. The base C may have end pieces of metal attached thereto. To the center of the base by means of a rivet or bolt I secure a clamp of any suitable construction, by means of which the book-support can be attached to a table or other object and turned horizontally to the desired position thereon, thus providing means whereby the position of the base may be' varied.
D refers to a board which is secured to the base by being pivotally attached at a short distance above its lower end to links E E, the lower ends of said links being pivotally attached to the ends of the base centrally and below the bottom of the longitudinal recess therein. By connecting the board to the base by links it may have a slight lateral movement and when at either inclination will bear against the walls of the recesses both above and below the pivot on which the board turns, 5 5
and in practice there will be little or no strain upon the pivots which attach the links to the board and to the base. The walls of the recess are on different inclinations, so that when the board is tilted on one side a book may be supported nearer a vertical position than it would be if the board were swung on the other side. When a book is placed upon the rest, its back will be against the inclined face of the board and its lower edge will rest against the inclined wall of the upper longitudinal recess.
The construction Of the base may be modi; lied and any form of clamp can be used with out departing from my invention.
I claim- 1. A book holder or support, consisting of a base having a longitudinal recess therein the lower part of which is undercut to provide walls of different inclinations the inclinations on opposite sides corresponding with those of the walls above, a board connected to the base and links attached to the base and to the board, whereby the board is held in swinging engagement with the base and is adapted to be maintained in either One of two inclinations.
' 2. A book holder or support consisting of a base and a board held in swinging engagement with the base, said base having stops above and below the point of connection against which the board is adapted to bear, for the purpose of maintaining the board at an inclination with the base, substantially as shown. Y
l 3. A book-holder consisting of a base having a longitudinal recess with inclined walls and below the same an undercut recess, links pivoted to the base, and a board pivoted to the upper ends of the links, substantially' as shown, the walls of the recess being at differ# ent angles so that the board may be supported at diierent inclinations, one of the sides of the recess forming a support for the lower' edge of the book when its back contacts with the inclined board.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HIRAM BURTON SMITH, SR.
