.CARL CLASSEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
- SWIMMING .APPARATUS FOR'ATTAGHMENT TOTHE` LEGS.
. SPECIFICATION pm f Lette!! Ptent N0. 682,379, dated. September 10, 1901. Application illsd April 10, 1901. Serial No. 55,172. A(lilo model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern,.-
.Be it known that I', CARL CLASSEN, a citizen of the United States, residingfat New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and- 'useful Improvements in LegAttachments for se in Swimming, of which the following is a full and complete' specification, such as -will enable others skilled in the art to which it -to appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to .leg attachments for use 'as aids in swimming, and the ob'ect ass thereof is to provide a deviceof this `'c which is .in the form of a sock or stocking",-
,I5 and whichimay be drawn lonto the 'foot and.
leg inthe .manner of an ordinary stocking, and whichis provided with 'a -plurality of webs or nies which open in the backward movement of the foot and close in the forzo ward movement thereof.
The invention is fully disclosed in 'the foilowing specification, of whichthe accompany'ing'drawin gs form a part, in which the separate parts of .my improvement are desig-v -nated by .the'same reference characters in eachof; thel views, and-in-which'- Figurelis a sideview of one ofV my impro ved leg attachments-for use in swimming; Fig. 2, a 'plan view of a lsection thereof or a section 3o of ithe webs or liies which I employ extended;
an attachment .of the class described which 4o will be hereinafter called a sock "or stock-- ing. The sockor stocking is providedl with I Fig. 3, 'a plan view of one of-said webs or flies extended, and Fig. 4a section on the line a: au of F ig. 3. j
'I-'n thejpractice of lmy invention I provide .a plurality of webs or .ilies. 6, any desired number of which maybe employed and which l are preferablydistributed over the entire sur-V 45 facethereojanfd' these' webs or flies each con- .sist of .two sheets-'Lana s of flexible material of .the form shown inFig. 3 when extended.
These-flexible strips or sheets 7 and 8 conthe edges thereof, and into the pocket thus formed is placed a stiening strip or plate 12 of any'suitable material. The side wings 10 of the webs or flies are folded along the dotted lines 13 and 14, and the outer members thereof are stitched to the sock or stocking along the outer borders of the outer or side sections or portionsl of said webs or dies. As thus constructedit will be seen that the sock or stocking when drawn onto the leg and secured thereon will fit thereto in the manner of an ordinary sock or stocking, and Vas the leg is drawn through the water the webs or flies will fold ,tightly against the leg "and foot, and when the leg 'is moved backwardly in the operation of swimming 4said webs or flies will open and catch the water and serve as levers to propel the body forward. I twill also be understood that the by means of aband -or other device secured sock or stocking can also be secured to the leg A i to the tp thereof, and my invention is not i limited to any particular device for accomplishing these purposes nor to the material used inthe construction of the attachment -nor to the websor flies thereof, and Ireserve `the 'right to make all such alterations as fairly come within the scope of my invention. Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
- "1. A swimmingattachmentfor the leg, consisting of a sock or stocking adapted to fricin position, apluralityof circumferential'snperposed series ofA webs or dies mounted upon the outer surface thereof and pivoted one 4beneath-.the otheirand adapted 4to be opened. in'Y the backward' movement of the leg, substantially as show'n and described.
sisting of a sock or stocking adapted to frictionally engage the leg and conforming to the sha-pe thereof, whereby it is' self-retained in position ,a plurality of circumferenti'ally-superposed series of webs or flies mounted upon the outer surface thereof, and pivoted one tionally engage the leg and conforming to` the shape thereof, whereby it is self-retained sisto'f a'bodypor'tion 9 and side wings 10,l the 5e' body portion being longer than the side wings in the backward movement of the leg the 10 and being stitched togetherat 11 around said webs or llies being provided at their side beneath the other and adapted to be opened4 2. A'swimming attachment for the leg, con- IOO with iexible connections attaehingjthe-Sinto,v
in posi tion', a plurality of circumferentallyfsu f .perposed series of webs or iiies mounted 4uponsnr-face thereof and pivoted' one l the outer beneaththe'other'and adapted to'be .Opened the backward movement of Vthe legi,l the said Websor iespbeing provid-ed interiorly,` i `with stiieningstrips,substantially as' shown 4. A.swimming'attaehinent-for theleg;conf` sisting-offv a soogk orstooking adapted-to ibe' adapted to fric tionally engage Vthe -leg and-conforming to the shape thereof, vwhereby it is self-retained strip. or
drawn 'thereonta'nd the-surface of which is" .provided with Webs Oli i'es which are'adapted to be opened in the Vbackward movement of .the1eg,-said webs or flies consisting of separate strips stitched together and provided with a oent'ralpooket inwlrioh is'placed a stifening plate, v,snbstantially as shown and described.
In testimony thatl claim the foregoing as my invention I have'signed my name, in prese'n'cejof the subscribing witnesses, this 8th l @day of April, 1901.
