Description
E. QUINN.
Water Gage.
Patented Aug. 27, 1867.-
Quinn strut ft"ir2.
EMMETT QUINN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. Letters Patent No. 68,235, dated August 27, 1 867; antedated July 1, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-GAUGES FOR STEAM-GENERATORS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, EMMETT QUINN, of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented a new and improved Water-Gauge; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Thewnature of my invention consists in the construction of the gauge, whereby I am enabled to avoid the use of the glass tube ordinarily used for such purpose, and substitute one composed of iron, or other suitable material, and plate-glass, and which is capable of being repaired at any time without being detached from the boiler. This gauge is also provided with facilities for cleaning or washing out the tube when soiled or dim from use.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct my invention, the following description is sufficient.
Figure 1 is a face view.
Figure 2, a. View of section on line a: 11:.
Figure 3, a view on line y Figure 4, a side View of a verticalsection of the top on line z z, fig. If and Figure 5, same view of the bot-tom part on line 2 2, showing the manner of admitting waterfrom the boiler to and shutting it oh from the gauge.
The main body A A, forming the sides and ends of the tubes, is one piece of cast iron, surrounded at top and bottom by wrought-iron rings or hands a a. To each end of the piece A'A is secured, by means of screws cc, the pieces containing the sockets ,intowhich the pipes connecting the gauge with the boiler are inserted. That at top, shown in fig. 4, for the admission of steam; the one at bottom, fig. 5, for water, and this piece also contains a three-way cock, F, for shutting oh the water from the boiler and permitting afree passage for the steam outward or the introduction of a wiper into the tube when it becomes soiled and needs cleaning. The front and rear sides of the tube are of plate-glass, B B, between which and the piece A A are packing pieces '66, the whole secured firmly together by screw passing through the four wrought-iron clamps G C C O, as shown in fig. 2. The scale or index-plates are of white metal, and .can be marked, as shown in fig.- 1, to denote the position of the water in the boiler when at above or below the proper level. A modification of this construction is shown in fig. 6, in which the cast-irou portion forms all parts of the gauge but the front plate of glass and clamps therefor,'but as the-water would show too indistinctly in such a gauge it is not considered the best, but may with some improvements be made the subject of a subsequent application.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, awatcr-gauge, consisting of the metal frame with the glass platesB secured thereto on opposite sides, as herein'shown and described.
