Description

VUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
n. H; AsHoRonT, on LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOILER GAGE-COCK HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 60,817, dated J anna-ry 1, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. H. AsHoRoFT, of the city of Lynn, county of Essex, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Handle for Water-Gage Cocks used on Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a true and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in so securing the wooden head or handle to the metal stem it is usually fastened to that the same cannot become loose by charting, (often resulting from the heat of the boiler,) when made in the usual way.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
1n the drawings, Figure l is a section of an ordinary handle. Fig. 2 is a section of my improved handle.
It will be seen from an examination of Fig. l that the wooden handle or head A is secured to a metal plate, B, behind it, by means of several screws, a. This plate is secured to metal tube C in any suitable manner.
It has been found by experience that by the heat of the boiler acting upon the plate B and its screws, the latter become loose and fall out, rendering the handle or wheel useless, the wood around the screws, &c., becoming charred.
To remedy such bad results I secure my wooden handle A between a metal back plate, B, and a second one in front, D, and riveting the two together by rivets b, as seen in Fig. 2.
It must be readily seen that under any ordinary circumstances the Wooden part ot' the handle cannot get loose, or at least get detached from its place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A handle for gage or water cocks for steamboilers, constructed in the manner substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
E. H. ASHGROFT.
