' GARBAGE-RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent4 No. 681,493, dated August 27', 1901.
Application filed February 26, 1901. Serial No. 48,942. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern/f Be it known that we, WILLIAM T. CAMERON and WILLIAMA.PURKs,citizeus of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Garbage- Receptacles, of which the following is a specication.
Our invention relates to a garbage-receptacle; and it consists of a receptacle or box and appurtenances, as will be hereinafter set forth, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the claims.
Figure l represents a perspective view of a garbage-receptacle embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section showing the receptacle in decanted condition. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation thereof, showing the receptacle in condition to be removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the ligures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a receptacle or box having an open top and gudgeons or journals B secured to the sides thereof.
C designates a fence in which is an opening D, which is occupied by said receptacle. 0n the walls of said opening D, on the inner side of the fence, are ears E E, in which the gudgeons B are mounted, so that the receptacle may swing in said opening D, and thus bring the top of the receptacle outside of the fence, it being noticed that the gudgeons are above the center of the receptacle, so that the receptacle will overturn or tilt to such inclination that the contents of the same may be effectively discharged, as shown in Fig. 2, after which the receptacle will automatically return to its normal or closed position, as shown in Fig. l.
Connected with the bottom of the receptacle is the cleat F, which projects beyond the side walls of the opening D, so as to abut thereagainst and limit the closin or return motion of the receptacle. In one of the ends of said cleat is the eye G, the same being adapted to receive the key H or other suitable locking device, which is also adapted to enter the eye J in the knee K, the latter being secured to the portion of the inner side of the fence adjacent to the end of the cleat F, so that when the receptacle is in closed position the eyes G J are in register, when the pin or key H is inserted in said eyes, thus locking the receptacle and preventing operation of the saine from without. Should the receptacle be heavily loaded, as the cleat F is above the horizontal limb of the knee K said cleat may rest on said limb, and thus relieve the ears E of some of the increased weight and strain. On the fence is mounted the lid J, which is adapted to cover the receptacle, it being seen that when said lid is raised the garbage may be poured into the receptacle and the lid then closed. When the garbage-collector calls, the key H is Withdrawn, when the receptacle may be swung to the front or outwardly and downwardly, so that the garbage may readily liow out and be carried away, after which the re ceptacle returns to its normal position, when it may be secured by said key, and so controlled against movement from without.
The top of the receptacle recedes or slopes from the front to the rear, and the ears E are open in their upper sides, by which provision when the receptacle is tilted forwardly it may beyraised and t-he gndgeons B withdrawn from the ears E, after which the receptacle may be drawn rearwardly, and so removed from the fence, this construction being of importance for cleansing, repairs, duc., and the subsequent reapplication of the receptacle in position and the reseating of the gudgeons B in the ears E. ceptacle A the cleat F strikes the knee K, the latter thus receiving the blow, which is prevented from being imparted to the fence or support C.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letiers Patent, is-
l. In a garbage-receptacle, a swinging box,- means for axially supporting the same, a stop cleat on said box and provided with an eye, an eye on the support, and a fastening device, said eyes being coincident and receiving said device.
2. A garbage receptacle consisting of a swinging box, gudgeons on said box, bearings for said gudgeons adapted to be connected with a support, an eye on said support, a stopcleat secured to said box and provided with In the closing motion of the reloo ing located above the eye on said support and adapted to be sustained thereon.
