T0 all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Lnssrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stonington, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trap-Nests, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to trap-nests, the object being to provide a nest with a door adapted to close automatically when the hen enters the nest and to open when the nest is relieved of the weight of the hen.

The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a trap-nest embodying the invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.

The frame of the device consists of

1, 2, and 3, connected by horizontal side bars 4l and la and suitable transverse bars. To the standards are secured side boards 5, the front ends of which project beyond the standards 1 and are beveled, as shown.

The rear end of the structure is closed by a board or wall G, and the top consists of a stationarysection 7, secured to the sides, and a hinged section 8, serving as a door through which access may be had to the nest. The front is closed by a Wall 9, the upper end of which joins aplatform 10, supported upon the short bars 14E, over which the hen passes on its way to the nest. From the outer side of each of the side boards 5 projects a pin 11, upon each of which is fulcrumed a lever 12, provided at its inner end with a headed pin 13 and formed at its outer end with an elongated slot 14. To the outer sides of the standards 1 and 2 at each side of the nest is secured an inclined bar 15, said bars serving as stops and supports for a gate 16, hinged adjacent to the upper edge of the front wall 9 and extending over the bars 15 to rest thereon. From each side of the gate 16 projects a headed pin 17, said pins extending through the slots 14C of the levers 12.

1S designates a box provided at opposite sides with bails 19, which are suspended from the pins 13, carried by the levers 12.

The utility and operation of the improvement will be readily understood. The hen enters through the front open end of the device, and when it reaches the box 18, in which the nest is arranged, the Weight of the hen lowers the box, causing the levers 12 to tilt on their pivotal supports, closing the gate 16 through the medium of the pins 17. The nest is thus closed up against the beveled ends of the sides 5, protecting the hen from intrusion by other fowls. As soon as the hen leaves the nest and passes onto the platform 10 the gate 1G opens by gravity to allow the hen to pass out. L

It will be apparent that the box 1S may be readily disconnected, when desired, for cleaning or other purposes, and also that the hinged cover may be readily raised to afford access to the nest for the removal of the eggs.

I claiml. A trap-nest comprising a frame having beveled sides; slotted levers pivotally secured to said sides; headed pins projecting from the rear ends of said levers; a box to contain a nest, a bail at each side of said box whereby the box is detachably suspended from said pins; ahinged gate in front of the beveled ends of the sides; pins projecting from said gate and extending into the slots of the levers; and stops for limiting the outward movement of said gate.

2. A trap-nest comprising a frame having side pieces beveled at their front ends; slotted levers pivotally secured to said sides and provided at their rear ends with projecting headed pins a box adapted to contain a nest, bails at oppositesides of said box whereby the box is detachably suspended from said pins; a hinged gate in front of the beveled ends of the sides; pins projecting from said gate and extending into the slots of the levers; and inclined bars secured to the standards of the frame to limit the downward movement of said gate.
