PERRY BROWN, or conAoroLis, PENNSYLVANIA.
" JOURNAL-BOX.
To all whom it Mag concern Be it knownthatl, PERRY BROWN, a citi zen of the United States, and aresident of Coraopolis, in the county of Alleghenyand State of Pennsylvania, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in J our-' nal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to improvements in journal boxes and more particularlyto the device forlocking the lid closed. I
WVhile my invention may be applied to various formsof boxes, 'I have illustrated'it in connection with a box of the character shown in my Patent No. 649,535., I
The" invention consists in the locking device hereinafter described and the preferable embodiment of which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part hereof. I v v i In said drawings, comprising two sheets: Figure 1 is a perspective view ofpart of a box with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section throughthe look: ing device. Fig. 3is atopplan view of the corner of the box. Fig.4 is a perspective view of the box with the lid open. Figs.- 5 and 6 are views of a modified form.
Referringnow to the details of the draw qings by numerals: 1 designatesthe' end of 'a journal box of any desired construction to which a lid 2 is pivoted by meansof the hinge joint 3. The lid is so arranged that it may be thrown open as shown in perspective-view in Fig. 4 or it maybe closed as shown in Fig. 1. At the side of the feed opening" opposite the hinge 3 the box is formed with a lug 4 having an inclined upper surface 5 and its lower edge beveled or rounded as indicated at 6 in Fig. 2. The extreme corner of the lid 2, opposite the hinge -8,'is provided with a'combined locking and lifting device comprising a plate 8 which is pivoted to a lug 10cast integrally with the lid 2', a pin 12 passing through the lug 10 and a boss 14 projecting'from the rear of the upper endof thefplate 8. The plate 8 is also provided with a handle 16 preferably OftllG construction shown in the drawings, whereby the operator may place a waste hook or other implement under the handle 16 and move the same slightly upon the pivot 12 as will be hereinafter explained. Thelid is provided with an opening'or recess 20,; shown-best'inFig. 2, and the plate 8 is provided with a latch 22 which is arranged 'S pecificati'on of Letters Patent.

to .projectfthrough the opening'or recess :20
"and, when'thelid'is'in the closed position,-
"s'wing under" the bevled or roundedpartb ofthe lug 4, as will-beseen from an inspectionof Fig.2.
Thus when 'the, parts are in the positions "shown in full lines in Fig. 2, the latch 22 of the plate Swill project through the opening or recess 20 of the lid 2 and be located under the lug 4 so as to 'lockjthe lid 2 in its closed position.
handle 16 and lifts the implement-,the first movement'will be to draw the handle 16, its plate 8 and the latch 22 from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Thus the latch 22 willfbe released from the lug "4 and further upward movementofjthe op'erators implement under the handle 16 will lift the When, however, the operator places any kind "of an implement under the lid fi'omthe position shown in Fig. l to the position shown in Fig. 4. order to permit the movement of the plate ,8 as just described, eitherthe front side of the lug 10 or the rear side of the plate 8 is cut slightly away; 'As illustrated in the drawings, the
front .side ofthe lug 10 is cut away as indicated at 24. This not only permits the handle 16 and its plateB to be swung in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 but the inclined'edge 24 acts as a stop to pre- 1 vent further movement of the plate 8 on its 1 pivot 12. I desire to call attention to the fact that the upperslirface of the'latch 22 is formed on an arc drawnffrom the center of lower part 6 ofthe lug '4 is formed of the same curvature so that when the latch 22- is in position, it cannot be moved outof position by any tendency of the lid to shake ,upward on its pivot 3. At the same time, any movement tending to draw the handle 16 on its pivot '12 will cause the plate 8 and its latch 22 to swing on. an arc on which the pin 12 isthe center and thus the latch 22 can easily'be released from the beveled or curved bottom 6of the lug 4. f
If, in the operation, the attendant should leave the lid in' 'the open position shown in Fig. 4 as soon asthe cars start'or are given any shaking motion whatever, or as soon as coupling of the cars takes place, the lidwill be vibrated from the balanced position shown inFig. 4 so'that it willfall and thus close itself. My locking -.device forms no obstruction to the complete automatic closthe pin '12 and that the curvature of the ing of the lid for there are no heavy springsto operate in closing, but all that the lid has to do is to move the plate-8 slightly-upward.
as the lower beveled edge 23 of the latch 22 strikes against the other beveled edge 5 of the lug 4 shown in Fig. 4.
. A modified form of my locking and lifting device is shown in Figs. 5 and 6. In this, modified form the lid is formed with a casbined locking and lifting device 32 has a handle 34 projecting outside of the casing and a latch 86 projecting from the inner side of the casing 30 to co-act with a lug 38 on the body of the box substantially identical with the lug 4L shown in Figs. 1 to 4:. In this construction, when the operator moves the handle 34, the latch 36 will be withdrawn to the left, as viewed in Fig. 6, and the inside of the casing 80 will act as a stop to prevent too much movement of the latch 36, so that the inside of the casing 30 performs the same function as the cut away portion 24 illustrated in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing and accompanying drawings it Wlll be seen that I have provlded a very simple form of locking and lifting device which can be added with practically no additional cost and which cannot possibly get out of order and at the same time the device will automatically lock the lid as the lid falls to its closed position.
It will be obvious that changes and modifications may be made in my invention without departing from the spirit thereof, the scope of which is set forth by the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is;
1. In a journal box, a box proper, and a lid closing the feed opening of the same, said lid having a latch pivotally supported thereon normally dropping by gravity-substantially parallel with the lid, the latch swinging at right angles to the lid under a part of the box as the lid closes, whereby the latch locks the lid to the box, substantially as described.
