TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, H. WESTON, of .Towanda, in the county of Bradford, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety and Cleanly-Lamps; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents the (upper) section of the body of a coal-oil lamp, the said body being made of glass or any other suitable material. B represents the "usual opening in which the top of the lamp, with its wick-tubes and wick, is secured. Immediately around this opening B is'forme'd an annular recess or groove, 0, in the body of the lamp; cl d represent holes or perforue tions, which run from the bottom of the groove G into the lamp.
The, object of this arrangement is twofold: it allows of ventilation of the body through the perforations, and then the recess or groove acts as a dripping-cup to catch any oil which may escape from the wick-tube above, and its perforations admit of the passage of oil, which is thus caught into the body of the lamp again.
Oil very frequently leaks from the wick-tube above the lamp-body; and when this is the case, in the lamps now in general use, it flows down the sides of the lamp, making it greasy and dirty, and causing it to emit an extremely unpleasant smell. With my improvement this oil'is caught and returned to the lamp, thus obviating the difliculties referred to. i
This recess or groove is easily formed in the lamp when it is being made, and that, too, without additional expense. Y I
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Forming a recess or groove in the top of the lamp-body, around the opening which receives the lamp-top i with its wick-tube; said groove having'perforations from its bottom into the lamp, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of July, 1867.
