IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 69,436, dated October 1, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER HOFFMANN, of Constableville, in the county of Lewis and State of New York., have invented a new and Improved Lamp 5 and I do .hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panyingdrawings, forming part of this specification.
The object ot' this invention is to construct a lamp which consists of two oil-chambersthe upper one, from which the wick draws its supply, being arranged in such a manner above the lower one, into which the oil is poured, that whenever it becomes empty it may be pressed down, its lower end having a plunger fitting close in a tube projecting from the lower chamber, whereby the oil is pumped into the upper chamber.
The la-mp is not liable to explode, and may be filled while burning without danger.
In the accompanying drawing, which represents a sectional elevation ot' my improved lamp, my invention is illustrated.
A is the main oil-reservoir, made ot' glass, sheet metal, or any suitable material, and forms the base or support of the lamp. In its center is arranged a vertical tube, a, which projects some distance above the reservoir A, and also into the same almost to its bottom.
B is the upper chamber, which may also be made of glass, sheet metal, or any other suitable material, to the top of which the burner b, of usual construction, is screwed or secured in any suitable manner. To the under side of this vessel B is secured a vertical tube, a., projecting downward from B, and is slightly smaller (or larger) in diameter than the tube a, so that it can be inserted into the same, and slide up and down therein, being guided by pins d, secured to the tube c, (or a.,) fitting into slots in the tube a., (or c.)
The lower end ofthe tube c is closed, and a narrow tube, e, extends upward from the same into the chamber B, as is clearly shown in the drawing, both ends of c being open. To the bottom of the tube e is also secured a small tube, f, which communicates with the lower end of tube c, and projects downward, and to the lower end of which a hollow plunger, g, is secured, which is surrounded by a rubber ring, h, so as to iit close in the tube a.
At the bottom ofthe tube @,and also of the plunger g, are arranged valves 'i and 7c, -opening upward.
A spiral spring, l, which rests on the seat of the lower valve, z', and presses against the bottom ot the plunger, tends to hold the tube c, and consequently the upper chamber, B, up.
Whenever oil is required in the upper chamber, (the lower vessel, A, having been filled through an opening, m, which is then well closed by a screw or other cover, a,) the same is pressed down, thereby depressing the plunger in the tube a. The lower valve, i, is closed and the upper valve, 7c, opened by this movement, and the oil contained in tube a (wherein it stood previous to the operation as high as in A) is forced through the tube c into the chamber B. The spring Z throws the plunger and vessel B up again, and thereby the upper valve is closed and the lower' one opened, allowing the oil to rise in a, so that the previ ous operation may be continued until a sufcient quantity of oil has been pumped int-o the vessel B, a tube, o, which extends from the vessel B, reaching nearly to the top ofthe same, through the bottom oftube c, to the tube a, so that should the oil in the vessel B rise above the top of tube 0, it will tlow through the same, and through a hole in tube a, (which hole is above the plunger, as shown,) into the vessel A, thus preventing the vessel B from being overfilled.
It will be understood from the construction of this lamp that any desired kind of burningiinid may be used in the same, the burner only having to be changed in accordance with the iiuid used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The reservoir B, provided with the tube C, adapted to slide in or over the tube a, for the purpose of pumping the oil from the reservoir A, as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the reservoir A, sliding reservoir B, tube a, sliding tube C, carrying the tubes e o, spring Z, and valvest and 7c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
