am ram: No. 39,795, dated May 4,1869;
SAFETY-LAMP.
To all 'it 0mm.- 1
Be it known that LFRANK SAUNDERS, of Aberdeen,
in the county of Monroe, and State of Mississippi, have invented certain newvand useful Improvements in' Safety-Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact descriptiofi of the same, reference beingdiadto the accompanying drawing making a portion of this specification, which is a vertical transverse section of a lamp made according-to my invention. I v v This invention consists in so arranging a vertical tube within the oil-reservoir of a kerosene or other lamp, as .not only to providea means whereby gases evolved from the oilmay escape from the reservoir when their pressure exceeds that of external air, thus obviating dangenof rupture pr explosion from, the accumulation of suc gases, but also to secure the access of airto the reservoir, to fill the space vacated therein by the gradual removal of the oil when the lamp is.. in use.. I p
, The invention further-consists in a feed-tube, fun- V nel, and sliding valve, or piston,so arranged at the top of the oil-reservoir as to enable the reservoir to befilled with very greatconvenience, when required. I
To enable others to understandthe nature and construction of my invention, ITwill proceedto describe it with reference 'to the drawings. f u
The oil-reservoir, A, of the lamp may be of any suitable form and material, and provided' at its top 'with a burner of any appropriate f l I Such reservoir is designed to be situated upon the hollow pedestal B, furnished with a supporting-base, G.
, Placed within the reservoir, in a nearly or quite upright position, is a tube,- D, the open upp r end of V which is extended upward toa'height above that of the surface of the oil when the reservoir is filled to the requisite degree, and which furthermore extends downward through the bottom of the reservoir, and through the pedestal, withits lower extremities opening below the latter. I I
When the lamp is in use, should the pressure of the gases generated from the oil in the reservoir exceed thatof the-external atmosphere, the excess of such gases will be caused to pass out therefrom through the tube D, thereby efl'ectuallypreventing any explosion I The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same- 3 l l l I or rupture of the reservoir, which might otherwise occur from the'accumulatidn of the gases within the reservoir. Furthermore, as the oil is lowered in the reservoir by the combustion thereof, when the lamp is in use, the air passing upward through the tube/occupies the space vacated thereby, as required to insure the proper burning of the flame.
Fittedinto the top or upper part'of the reservoir is a horizontal feed-tube, e, which, alt-its inner'end, opens into the reservoir, but which may be closed at its outer end, as shown at a, and has at its upper side a funnel, b.
Passing through the closed endof this tube a is a stem, 12, at the inner end of which is a valve, or piston, c, and which has coiled around it, a spiralf spring,
0, which forces the valve, or piston inward past the I mouth, or orifice of the funnel, to v wholly close the tube,
thus providing against any escape from the reservoir of either-liquids or gases, which mightotherwise occur. When it is desired .to supply the reservoir with oil,
the stem is drawn outward, to bring the valve, or pis-' ton to the outer side of the mouth, or orifice of the funnel, whereupon the 'oil, being poured into the. funnel, passes through the tube a into the reservoir, the
air displaced thereby passing outward through the tube D: When the reservoir is thus filled to the requisite,
degree, the stem b is released, and the valve, or piston a being forced inward, as ust mentioned, by the spring e, again closes the feed-tube'a.
What I claimas my invention, and desire to secure .2. The feed-tube a, with its piston-valve e, and funnel b, in combination with the oil-reservoir A, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified, v
