TQ ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN: v i
Be it known that I, JQHN` SNIvELY, ot' Williamsburg, in the county of Blair, nd State of Pennsylvania, have invented^a new and improved Chimney-Top; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which v Fignre 1 represents my improved chimney-top in perspective.
Figure 2 represents a different form of the same.
Similar letters'of reference indicate correspondingparts in the two figures.
In this invention the chimney is provided with a spark-arrester, and a revolving screen to 'regulate the draught.
This invention is intended to obviate two diiculties in chimneys hitherto in use: ther'rst, thc danger of conllngration from sparks escaping from the chimney; and the second, the occasional descent of puffs of air into the chimney in high galesof'win'd, sending the smoke, gas, and llames into the rooms of the house.
In the drawings, A represents a cover of wire network, attached round t-he sides to a frame, B, of the proper size to adjust to the chimney. VTo prevent the lodging of any foreign substances upon this cover, I raise its centre slightly, making the whole assume th'e form of a low pyramid or cone. This cover is fixed within the top of the chimney, :rnd electunlly prevents the escape of sparks therefrom. Secondly,'I fix a. vertical shaft in the centre or the chimney, as shown at G, providing a 4suitable beam, C, in which to stop its lower extremity, and passing the shaft .through a circular aperture formed for the purpose in the apex of the py'ramidal cover A. Upon this shaft is xed a horizontal arm, D, one end of which'bears the screen E, the opposite Iend being formed into a wind-rudder, F.- The arm D is free to revolve with the shaft G, and, guided by the rudder F will always present the screen E tothe wind. The screen E, being thus at all times stationed upon the 'Windward side of the chimney, always causes the wind to strike over. the chimney, eiectually preventing the occasional descent of puffs of airl into the flue.
This improved chimney-top is `cheaper and more simple in construction than any now in use for a similar purpose, and is particularly. designed in arrangement and form for application to ordinary brick'chimneys. It dispenses altogether with the cumbersome and ugly basket of gnuze with which some hnve enveloped the upper part of the chimney, substituting inits place a. far less expensive bnt neater and equally serviceable cover,.
which is simply to be inserted into the top ofthe chimney, where it will be out of sight.
i IInving thus describedmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-f The combination of the slightlyconvex co-ver A, when xed within they top cfa chimney, withy the vertical shaft or spindle G, the arm D, the vane F, and the screen E, all construct'ed,combii{ed, and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specied.
To the above-specification of my improvement I have signed my hand this 14th day of May, 1867.
JOHN SNIVELY.
