SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681,046, dated August 20, 1901.

Be it known that I, HARRY ELINQFF, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newand usefullmprovements in Ledgers and Account-Books, of which the following is a specification, `reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ledgers or accountbooks, and more particularly to that class of ledgers containingr removable pages or leaves.

The herein-described invention has for one object to construct a ledger or account-book of this character wherein any number of leaves may be easily removed therefrom and again inserted in proper position. Furthermore, the invention aims to construct a book of this class wherein any page in the book may be easily removed without removing any of the other adjacent or consecutive pages.

The present invention has for its still further object to construct an attachment of the above-described character that will be eX- tremely simple, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture; furthermore, one that may be readily opened and closed and easily handled.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combinav tion and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically "pointed out in the claims.

. perspective view of the mechanism as shown In the drawings the reference-numeral l indicates the back of the book, and 2 3 indicate the hinged sections, which are centrally connected, as shown at 4, by a rod 5, extending from end to end of the hinged portion.

The reference-numerals 6 indicate standards, which are rigidly secured to the section 3, said standards being preferably hollow and provided with a series of teeth 7. The lower plate of the section 3 is provided at each end with a semicircular guide 8, said guides being tubular in form and adapted to receive semicircular rods 9, the latter being rigidly secured to the section 2.

The reference-numerals lO indicate the pages or leaves of the book, having apertures for the reception of the standards 6.

The reference-numerals 12 13 indicate, respectively, the upper and lower plates forming the casing for the locking mechanism, which is suitably spaced apart by means of end blocks 14E, secured between the plates by screws 15. In said casing is arranged the locking-bars 16 17, said locking-bars being preferably Z-shaped and operating in. close proximity to each other. The locking-bars are slotted, as at 18 19, to receive the guide-pins 20 for holding the bars in proper position and in proper relation to eachother.

vThe ends of the locking-bars are wedgeshaped, as shown at 2l, and adapted to engage in the teeth 7 of the standards 6. The said bars are springpressed by means of n springs 22 23, which serve to normally engage the wedge ends 2l of the bars with the teeth 7. The lockingbars are still further provided with` notches 24 25 to receive a key, which key is adapted to pass through a suitable opening 26, formed in the upper plate 12. The upper and lower plates 12 13 are also provided with apertures to receive the standards 6. On the inner face of the section 2 are secured eyes 28, which are adapted to receive semicircular hooks 29, the latter being swiveled thereto, so that thefree ends of the hooks may be inserted in the standards 6.

The operation of my im provedledger is as follows: When. it is desired to remove a cer tain page from the ledger or book, the key is IOO inserted to operate the locking-bars, and

when partially rotated will tend to operate both locking-bars inwardly, thereby retracting the same and releasing the Wedge ends from engagement with the teeth of the standards. The semicircular hooks 29 are then released from engagement with the standards, which will permit the casing carrying the locking-bars to be easily removed therefrom. These hooks are then again placed in proper position and the ledger is turned to the page that it is desired to remove, and the pages preceding the same areturned over upon the semicircular hooks. When this has been done, these hooks are again disengaged from thestandards, the page removed, the hooks -again engaged with the standards, and the pages that were held by the hooks again returned to their position Aon the standards. The hooks are then again disengaged, and as these hooks are swiveled in the eyes 28 they may be readily turned downwardly, so that the back may be closed. After the hooks 29 have been thus disengaged the casing carrying the locking mechanism is again placed on the standards 6 and the pages locked in position.

It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In combination in a ledger, two hinged sections, upright standards secured in one of said sections, locking-plates adapted to engage said standards, and hooks attached to the other hinged section and adapted to engage said standards, substantially as set forth.

2. In a ledger of the character described, the combination of two hinged sections, two standards secured to one of said sections, spring-pressed locking-bars adapted to normally engage said standards, and swiveled hooks arranged in the other hinged section and adapted to engage in the upper portions of said standards, substantially as set forth.

3. In a ledger of the character described, the combination of two hinged sections, hollow notched standards arranged in one of said sections, perforated plates forming a casing carrying locking-bars adapted to engage said standards, swiveled hooks arranged upon the other hinged section, and suitable guides secured at each end of said hinged sections, all parts being arranged and operating substantially as shown and herein specified.
