CARD RECORD OR INDEX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,549, dated July 30, 1901.

Be it known that I, ROBERT H. BREEDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card Records or Indexes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to a card record or index designed especially for use in banks or mercantile establishments in place of the ordinary account-books, records, ledgers, or indexes; and in such connection it relates to the construction and arrangement of such a card record and index.

The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide a card record or index of simple construction in which the individual cards are readily accessible for the purposes required without complete removal from the box or drawer wherein the cards are arranged; second, to provide in such a card record or index a card pivotally secured in the box at or near one of the upper corners of the card and adapted to be swung vertically upon its pivoted support to either enter the box or be partially withdrawn therefrom,an d, third, to provide in such a card record or index a card pivotally secured in the box or drawer at or near one of the upper corners of the card, so as to be readily swung in a vertical plane to either enter the box or drawer or to be partly withdrawn therefrom, said card having a body, one face of which is adapted to be written on, and abase flexibly united, so that when withdrawn the body of the card may be bent back at right angles to its base to permit the body of the card to lie fiat in a horizontal plane and to receive the matter to be written thereon.

The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a card rec- 0rd or index embodying the main features of my invention, one of the cards being illustrated as swung out of the box and bent flat; and Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken in the line 0: cc of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, a represents the box or drawer, and b the series of cards contained therein. At one corner near the top of the box or drawer a is located a longitudinally-arranged rod cl, forming, as hereinafter more fully described, the pivotal support for each card 12. The cards I) are each perforated at or near an upper corner I), and for the purpose of permitting the card to swing easily upon the rod d within the box or drawer a and to fit snugly at its side and bottom within the box or drawer a this corner b is slightly rounded. The side I) opposite to the side at the upper corner of which the card is pivotally connected to rod (1 is rounded to permit that side of the card to readily swing into and out of the box or drawer a without impinging upon the side of said box or drawer a. By preference each card I) consists of a base 12 the upper corner of which is pivoted to the rod, and abody portion b, which carries the rounded side I) and is adapted to receive the writing. The base 6 and body b are flexibly united in any preferred manner, so that the body 11 may be bent at substantially right angles to the base 19 when the body of the card is lifted or swung upon its pivotal support completely out of the box or drawer a, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. Each card 17 carries at the upper edge of its body portion 17 a tab 19 which may not only serve for indexing purposes, but also as a means for lifting the card and swinging it upon its pivotal support in the box or drawer at until the body I) is completely out of said box or drawer.

In operation the card is first swung in a vertical plane upon its pivotal connection with the box or drawer until it stands upright, with its body projecting above the top of the box or drawer, and then bent at right angles to its base into a horizontal position. The body is then elevated to avertical plane, and then body and base are swung downward until the card rests within the box or drawer, with its pivoted side adjacent to the side of the box or drawer and its lower edge adjacent to the bottom of said box or drawer.

Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a card record or index, a box or drawer and a card consisting of a body, one face of which is adapted to receive Written matter, and a base flexibly connected to the body,

' the base being pivotally secured at one, corner to the interior of the box or drawer, said card adapted to be swung in a vertical plane about its pivotal support and the body bent at right angles to the base to expose the sur- 1o face of the body of the card to be Written on,

substantially as and for the purposes described.
