Be it known that I, CHARLES P. WHITTLE, residing in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Drawers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the'drawin gs representing like parts.

This invention relates to a novel construction of drawer especially designed and adapted among other uses to be employed by druggists to hold labels of the same size or of different sizes.

In accordance with this invention the drawer is provided with a preferably removable and inclined frame having a plurality of receptacles or pockets for the reception of the labels or cards, the said receptacles or pockets being arranged in substantiallyhori-- zontal rows at different elevations, so that the labels in the pockets of one horizontal row may be' withdrawn without disturbing the labels in the pockets of the adjacent horizontal rows. The pockets or. receptacles of eachrow may and preferably will be provided with a label-retaining device, which may and preferably will be' made in the form of a light sprin g, secured at-one end and having its free end resting upon the labels with sufficient pressure or force to prevent .the said labels being disturbed by drafts of air or otherwise when the drawer is opened.

Referring to Fig. l, A represents a sufficient portion of a prescription or other desk, which is provided with a drawer embodying this invention. The drawer referred to may and preferably will be made as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and consists of a front a, sides c a2, back c?, and bottom a4, within which is placed a label-holding frame B. The frame B is preferably made as herein shown and consists of side pieces b b', connected by a series of substantially horizontal and vertical pieces or walls b2 b5, (see Fig. 2,) arranged to form a series or plurality of steps, which are subdivided into receptacles or pockets b4 by a The partitions b5 maybe separated from each other any desired distance to form the pockets b4 of 1 varying widths, according to the size of labels Z920 it is desired to place in said pockets. The pocketed label-receiving frame B may and preferably will be supported at its front end by a ledge or board d, secured to the inner side of the front a of the drawer, and at (See Fig.

In order to render the labels inthe pockets of the lowest row of the frame as readily accessible as those in the pockets of the higher rows, the front a of the drawer is made in two parts 2 3, the upper part 2 being hinged or otherwise secured to the lower part 3, so as to drop outward when it is unlatched from the desk. I prefer this construction; but I do not desire to limit my invention in this respect, as the label-receiving frame may be placed in a drawer of ordinary construction, as shown in Fig. 6.

The drawer maybe supported in anyusual or suitable mannerthat is, it may rest upon its bottom, as represented in Figi, or it may be supported from its upper end byside pieces d10, after the manner of the ordinary moneydrawer, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

The labelsupporting frame I5 may and preferably will he made separate from the drawer to enable it to be used with drawers of ordinary construction and such as are already in use and also to enable the space d20 below the frame to be utilized, if desired.

Then the drawer-casin g is supported on its bottom, its sides may be made inclined similar to the sides of the frame B but when supported at its top, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the sides of the drawer-casing may be made of the same height as the front and back.

I have herein described my invention in connection with a druggists prescriptiondesk, and while it is particularly well adapted for such purpose I do not desire to limit my invention in this respect, as it may be used for other purposes, and the pockets of the frame I3 may be used to receive cards and like articles.

The sides a' a2 of the drawer will preferably be provided with extensions (lso, which project beyond the back a3 and afford a support for the drawer when the latter is drawn out, so as to render the labels in the upper row of pockets easily accessible.

By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the walls h2 are secured to the side pieces l) b' of the frame B, so as to incline downwardly and rearwardly and form with the base-line or lower edge of the said side pieces obtuse angles, and the walls b3 incline toward the front of the side pieces at an obtuse angle, and these obtuse angles are such that the walls Ul b3 form with each other right angles, by which construction the pockets lare made of uniform or equal depth at their top and bottom, so that when the labels are placed in the pockets their front edges are substantially in a line forming a continuation of the next lower wall b5 and may readily be withdrawn one at a time without disturbing those beneath.

I claiml. A drawer provided within it with a labelreceiving frame having pockets or receptacles of uniform depth at their top and bottom arranged in substantially horizontal rows at different elevations, and having the bottoms of the elevated rows downwardly and rearwardly inclined and extended from the bottom of the rear walls of the upper rows to the upper part of the rear walls of thc adjacent lower rows, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. A label-receiving frame B composed of side pieces having secured to them a plurality of walls b2 b3 inclined in opposite directions with rela-tion to the base-line or lower edge of said side pieces and at substantially right angles to each other to form rows of substantially uniform depth at their top and bottom, and partitions forming in said rows pockets or receptacles b4 having their back portions at a lower level than their front portions and of substantially uniform depth, whereby when the said side frames are inclined the rows of pockets are at different elevations, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. A drawer having its front provided with a movable upper part orhalf, and an inclined frame provided with pockets or receptacles arranged in substantially horizontal rows at different elevations and located in said drawer with the lowermost row of pockets substantially iiush with the upper edge of the stationary part of the said front, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. A label-receiving frame B composed of side pieces having secured to them a plurality of walls b2 b3 inclined in opposite directions with relation to the base-line or lower edge of said side pieces and at substantially right angles to each other to form rows of substantially uniform depth at their top and bottom, and partitions forming in said rows pockets or receptacles h4 having their back portions at a lower level than their front portions and of substantially uniform depth, and substantially U-shaped springs c having their free ends secured to the rear walls b3 of said pockets, substantially as described.
