JOHN W. MCGILL, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF. COLUMBIA Letters Patent No. 67,895, dated August 20,1867.
mesa-newsman.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be itknown that 1, JOHN W. h-IGGlLLpf the pity of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented'a new and useful. improved Fastener, which I designate Exee'l,; for holdingor binding closely together paper, cloth, leather, or othervflexible material;- and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip' tion of the construction and operation of the same, reference beinghad to the annexed drawingspmaking a part of this specificatiomin which' Figure 1 is a perspective view. Figure 2 2" 2" 2', a' strip of sheet brass or any'otherflexible material shaped to suit the pur-po'se'snu Figure 3 3, the fastener partially perfected. Figure 44: 4", the bottom of the fastener. Figure'fi, the fastener, showing the necessary bendings of the material to make it complete; and figure 6, the fastener perfected as it appears when holding together papers, 850.
'Thenature of my invention consists in havinga strip of brass or any other flexible material, formed as ataa a" a a, fig 2 2 2 2', having an enlarged centre, square, or oval, or of any desired shape, with two wings of less breadth than the centre, (bothpointedJ having in the centre of the square or oval portion a slot orapertu re equal to the [thickness of both of the said wings, which are to turn over or under at b, (as given in the various figures,) and entering the aperture or slot therein at. g, (as-given in the various figures,) form the legs of the fastener, as at c e, fig. 1, fig. 3, and fig. 3,vvhieh are to run through sheets of paper, cloth, leather, &c'., proposed to be fastened; and when put-through the paper or other material each leg turned'do'vi'n outward from each other as at d, fig. 6, firmly holding the paper or other material in the required position. The hole, aperture, or slot in the enlarged centre of'thestrip', (as given in the various figures,) acting on the legs so as to confine and bind themclosely together; and hinder them from widening too far apart, and thereby making too wide an opening in the papers or other material so bound, adding strength both to the papersorother materials so used, and the entire fastener. v v
The other figures and letters marked on drawing are further elucidations of the said fastener. I do-not confine myself. to any given lengths, or bre'adths, or shapes, or material'for my fastener; the bendings therein must so be made of proper lengths to suit, which can be easily donewithout resorting inthis: specification to any definite or fixed lengths, but substantially as herein set forth and given in the drawings.
Claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to. secure by Letters Patent,is--
The within-described fastener, made of a single piece or stripof sheet brass, or other flexible material, bent into a T-shape by having the ends irhioh form the legs or shanks turned over or hnder, and run through a hole in the enlarged centre of the head of the fastener, to secure said legs or shanlcs tightly together, so that when said legs or shanks are run through the paper or other material designed to be bound, and turned down on the other side, they will not enlarge the hole in the paper, but will lie snugly together and make a close joint, substantially as herein set forth and described.
