PAPER-FASTENER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,526, dated May 2, 1865.
being perforated at one end, as shown, in ord( r l that the other end, after being properly passed through the papers, may be returned through the said perforation, and the end then turned down to secure the papers, as shown.
In the drawings, Figure l shows several my improved fastener.
In all the figures, A, B, and C are the fasteners, the perforations at the large ends thereof being formed oval or oblong, as at M and H, Figs. 5 and 6, or round or half-round, as at N, Fig. 7.
The fastener A, Figs. l, 3, and 5, is larger than the others, and may prove useful for attaching heavy or numerous papers. It has also two perforations, I and M, as plainly shown in Fig. 5.
In use A is passed four times through the paper, and is bent twice upon itself, as shown in Fig. 3. The other fasteners are simply passed twice through lthe papers, and the end bent once, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4:.
If deemed desirable, the fastener may be bent to lap the ends of the papers, as shown at B, Fig. 1.
For all ordinary purposes I believe the small fastener C, made of thin metal or wire,
will prove amply suflicient, but they may be` made of any desired size, form, or thickness. I am aware that metal paper-fasteners have 4been long in use; but I do not known or be lieve that any have been before known or used in which the fastener is returned through thepaper and secured by bein gpassed through an opening at one end of itself, and bent as described, sewing the papers together, as it were, by the use of a single metal piece or thread.
