' UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE:
CHRIST 'BLASER, on BERWIGK, KANSAS.
HAY-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,373, dated July 16, 1901.
Application filed January 23,1901. Serial No. 44,374. (No model.)
same.v
My invention relates to hay-knives, and has for its Object to provide an implement of this class which is strong and efficient.
With this object in view myinvention consists in the novel arrangement of my knife and of an adjustable step or footpiece and also in certain other points of novelty, which will be hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure -1 is an elevation of my improved knife. Fig. 2 is a section through the knifeblade, step, and shank. Fig. 3 is a detail view of my adjustable step and fastening.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, in which- 1 is the knife-blade, secured by rivets 2 to the shank 3. Said knife-blade is provided with an upwardly-inclined cutting edge 4 and also with avertical cutting edge 5. The shank 3 is provided at equal intervals be tween the knife blade 1 and the handle 6 with bolt-holes 7 at right angles to the knifeblade 1.
8 indicates my adjustable step or footpiece, composed of the convex serrated top 9 and the concave side 10, said side being provided with a bolt-hole 11 to receive the bolt 12.
18 is a bracket provided with the burs 14 and 15, said bracket being offset inwardly at 16, directly in front of the bolt-hole 11 in the perpendicular side 10, in order to allow free access to the nut 17. The bolt-hole 11 and the bur 14 are the same distance apart as the bolt-holes 7 in the shank. 3, and the top 9 of the step is provided with an opening 18 to receive the bur 15, which is thenriveted.
Having thus described the several parts of my invention, the same are assembled for operation as follows: When it is desired to adjust the step or footpiece, the' same is disengaged from the shank 3 by unthreading the nut 17. As aforesaid, the bolt-hole 11 and the but 14 register with any two successive bolt-holes 7 in the shank 3. Consequently in order to adjust said step or footpiece the bur 14 is inserted in one of the bolt-holes 7, and the bolt 12 is secured in the 'hple directly above. Thus it will be seen that the footpiece may be adjusted at any point intermediate the knife-blade and the handle, the limit of said adjustment depend: ing only upon the number of holes.
Having thus described my invention, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction herein set forth, as various slight changes might be made there-' in which would fall within the limit and scope of my invention, and I consider ,myself entitled to all such changes; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a hay-knife,the combination with the knife-blade and shank, of an adjustable step having a top and side, said side being provided with a bolt-hole, a bracket and a bur, substantially as described.
2. In a hay-knife, the combination of the shank provided with a series of bolt-holes, an adjustable step, having a top and side, said side being provided with a bolt-hole, a bracket being offset inwardly, and a bur, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHRIST BLASER.
