SHREDDING ATTACHMENT FOR FEED OUTTERS.
NO. 694,398. v Patented Nov. 30,1897.
ammtow muses Nrrn SHREDDING ATTACHMENT FOR FEED-GUTTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,398, dated November 30, 1897.
Application filed July 23, 1897. Serial No. 645,726. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that We,WILLIAM D. HEEBNER and NATHANIEL METZ, citizens of the United States, residing at Lansdale, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shredding Attachments for Feed- Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to machines for shredding and dividing cornstalks and it consists, first, of a peculiar cutter-bar, and, second, in the combination of the said cutter-bar with the feed-rolls and cutter-head of a cutter, all as fully set forth hereinafter and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of our improved cutter-bar in one form in which it may be made, and Fig. 2 is a sectional View illustrating the arrangement of the bar in a cutter having a cutter-head and feed-roll.
The cutter-bar A is suitably constructed for attachment to any desired style of machine, or, for instance, to machines of differ ent styles where it can be substituted for the ordinary cutter-baras,for instance,in shredding-machines, shredders and snappers, or feed-cutters, in different styles of all of which machines cutter-bars are employed. These cutter-bars generally consist of plain bars, against the upper forward edges of which the cutter-head or shredding-head operates, the cutter-head consisting generally of a shaft carrying a series of inclined curved knives and the shredder-head consisting frequently of saws sometimes set at an angle to the shaft.
Our improved cutter-bar or shredder-bar consists of a plate adapted for attachment to the machine opposite to the lower feed-r0112, as shown in Fig.1, and between the latter and the cutter-head B, whatever may be the character of the latter. Near the lower part of the bar is a straight-edge m, which constitutes the cutting edge,'and between this edge and the upper part of the bar is a curved or fiat face a, and from this face may project a series of cutting projections 4: 4 at, shown as arranged in rows and alternating, presenting a series of cutting-teeth above the cutter-bar.
Above the face 0 the bar is rounded off to form a curved edge e, connecting the face 0 and the horizontal face of the bar, and from the latter extend ears 5 5, which are perforated to receive the bolts by which the bar is attached'to the machine.
The stalks are passed, as usual, between the feed-rolls 1 2, which may be corrugated or plain and of any desired size, and as they pass over the rounded edge e of the bar, instead of being cut off sharp upon said edge, as usual, they are bent by the action of the cutter-head B down onto the face 0 and are shaved and cut by the cutters, and when the face is provided with teeth 4 4 4, the latter,
when the stalks are carried downward and forward, divide the stalks longitudinally, breaking, splitting, and shredding the same, and when they reach the cutting edge a: they are then cut or broken off between the said edge and the teeth or knives of the cutterhead.
By the application of this device to ordinary cutters we can convert the latter into a shredder and can cut the corn product into broken, torn, split, and shredded pieces, preparing it-for use instead of hay, or if used for bedding it will better absorb the liquid manure than the fodder which is cut off square, as usual. The Whole structure A may consist of one piece of metal or of two parts, a blade of steel f being bolted or otherwise secured to the body portion, which may be of cast metal, and the cutting edge being at the top of the steel blade.
It will be obvious that the cutter or shredder bar A may be made of any suitable size, adapted to any kind of machine, either to machines in permanent use or those especially constructed for the purpose.
Without limiting ourselves to the precise construction and arrangement of parts shown, we claim as our invention 1. A shredding and cutter bar consisting of a bar adapted for attachment to a machine provided with a cutter or shredder head, having a cutting edge as, and above the latter a series of teeth at, t, at, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A cutter-bar provided with a cutting edge 00, a series of teeth above said edge and a rounded edge e, at the top of the bar, substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with the feed-rolls and cutter-head of ashredder, of a cutter-barhaving at face 0, a rounded edge above said face, and cutting edge 00 below the same, substantially as described.
4:. The combination in a cutter, of a cutterhead B, and feed-rolls 1, 2, and a cutter-bar having teeth i, at, 4, and a cutting edge 00 below the said teeth, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination in a cutter, of a cutternames to this specification in the presence of 20 two subscribing witnesses.
