UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK C. OAREW, OF GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
PICTURE-FRAME SUPPORT.
SPEGHICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,221, dated July 9, 1901. Application filed February 25, 1901. Serial No- 48,825. (No model.)
of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Frame Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in picture-frame supports, and has particular reference to that form of support which is provided with means for adjusting the angle of thepicture-frame.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a support for a picture-frame provided with means for adjusting said frame to any desired angle and securely holding the same at any given angle.
Another object is to provide an adjustable picture-frame support whereby the picture may be held at any desired angle and at the same time the operable parts of the support be concealed.
WVith these objects in view it consists of a support for picture-frames comprising a main body portion, a rack secured to the main body portion, and means for securing the upper edge of the picture-frame to said rack at any desired point in the length of said rack, the lower edge of the frame resting upon a flange formed upon said main body portion, whereby the picture will conceal the rack and se curing means.
My invention contemplates other objects and advantages; and it consists of certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective view of a picture-frame support embodying the features of my invention, with a supported frame shown in dotted lines.
My invention comprises any preferred form of main body portion, as 1, provided, as at 2,
with means for securing the same to a wall. I preferably form the said main body portion at the top with extensions, as 3 3, and beginning about midway of its length and extending at an acute angle on either side are provided braces 4 at. A frame-supportin g flange, as 5, extends outwardly at any preferred angle from the main body of the support.
A rack, as 6, is secured to the main body of the device in any desired manner, but preferably only at the ends of said rack. This rack is formed of any suitable length and thickness and has its edge which comes next to the main'body of the device cut away for the greater part of its length, but for only a comparatively shallow depth. At various points of the said edge I preferably provide notches or recesses, as 7 7, which may be of any suitable depth and extend in an upwardly-slanting direction.
Any form of attaching means, as 8 8, may be secured to the picture-frame, to which the wire or other supporting medium 9 is secured. This wire is adapted to be passed between said rack 6 and the main body portion 1 before the ends thereof are made fast.
From the foregoing description the operation of my invention will be obvious. The wire 9, having been passed between the rack able up and down therebetween, is secured to the picture-frame and the lower edge of the frame placed upon the flange 5. When the 6and main portion 1 and being freely movparts are in this position, the operator may release them, and the wire Will naturally fall into the notch in the rack 6 nearest to and above the same when released, the picture-frame as suming an angle corresponding in degree to the degree of height of the notch receiving the wire. To alter the angle at which the picture is resting, all that is necessary is to move and minor details of construction within the spirit and scope of my invention.
The notches 7 in rack 6 leave projections, as 10 10, which may be of any thickness and of anylength desired. In fact, the rack 6 may be formed of a single piece of wire bent into a series of hooks corresponding with projections 10, and it would not be beyond the scope of my invention to form said projections from separate pieces distinct from the main rack 6.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a picture-frame, provided with a securing-Wire, of means for supporting the same at any desired angle, comprising a main body portion, a flange extending from the lower edge of said frame, and a rack-bar secured to the main body portion with a space between it and said main body portion for the passage of the securing-wire, and notches formed in said rack-bar and opening into said space, said notches being adapted to receive said wire, and thereby support said PATRICK C. OAREVV.
