To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY K. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States,residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovement in Syringes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has a general relation to improvements in vaginal syringes; and.,it has especial relation to that class in which a shield is provided to prevent the escape of the enema excepting through a tube specially arranged for its escape and which embodies such escape-tube. Heretofore such syringes have been constructed with the pipe connected with the shield inflexibly, so that the eX- tent of penetration of the former is always the same, and these shields have been so arranged that the enema may be administered only when the body is in an upright position. The first limitation is objectionable in that it affords no graduation to apply the medicated solution to any particular part of the walls that may need it, and the second is objectionable because the arrangement of the shield is such that the escape of the solution is only completely successful when the body is upright, and when it is recumbent it is apt to escape about the shield, to the soiling or wetting of the bedding and consequent discomfort of the patient; and a further objection is found in the fact that when the douche is applied from a faucet connected with Waterworks when the pressure is high the force of the water, unless restrained or moderated, is so violent as to be detrimental to the delicate structure of the member to which it is applied.
One object of my invention is to overcome these objections by providing an appliance whereby the pipe is made adjustable in the shield, so that its length above that may be graduated, and a shield thatV will permit the enema to be administered to a recumbent pa tient Where an upright position of the body `may be painful, difficult, or even dangerous;
and a further object is to provide an appliance that will break the force of the water when it is used from a faucet connected with a water-main.
To the aforesaid objects my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction,
arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specication.
In the drawing, l is the pipe, which may be and preferably is longer than the ordinary pipe. Connected with this pipe is a rubber tube 2 of such length as may be required, provided with a flexible terminal 3, by which it may be slipped on a washstand-faucet or other source of water-supply, or a pump-*syringe when a medicated solution is to be administered. Interposed in this tube 2 is a bulb 4E, which is an elongated ellipsoid, and
in which is a hollow ball 5, of rubber, with a corrugated or iluted surface, so that if it is driven by the force of the water to the discharge end it will not operate to entirely close the outlet. Freely sliding on the pipe l is a hollow ellipsoidal'bulb 6, having at one end an elastic neck 7 and at the other an open neck 8 much larger than the pipe l and from one side 'a converging outlet 9, connected, preferably, by means of a hard-rubber coupling l0 with a drain-pipe ll. In operation the bulb 6 may be adjusted along the pipe l as the requirement of the location of the affected part is nearer or farther from the mouth of the vagina and the terminal 3 ap* plied to any desired source of supply of the liquid to be injected. The pipes 2 and ll may be of any length that the circumstances may require. lt will also be obvious that the form of the pipe l is not limited by my invention, as the bulb 6 may be used with any of the forms in common use.
I claim as my inventionl. In a syringe the combination of a pipe, an ellipsoidal bulb having a mouth toward the discharge of said pipe larger than said pipe, and a flexible opening opposite said mouth to fit and slide on said pipe, a tube attached to said pipe arranged to be connected with a source of fluid-supply, a bulb interposed in said tube larger in diameter than said tube, and a ball in said bulb having a roughened surface, substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved article of manufacture consisting 0f a bulb arranged at its end to be connected with tubes, and having inclosed a ball having a roughened surface, substantially as shown and described.
3. The herein-described syringe consisting of a pipe, au ellipsoidal bulb havinga mouth toward the discharge of said pipe larger than said pipe, and a flexible opening opposite said mouth to t and slide on said pipe, a lateral opening iu said bulb arranged to be connected with a discharge-pipe, a discharge-pipe connected with said opening, a tube attached to the pipe arranged to be connected with a source of Huid-supply, a bulb interposed inv said tube, and a ball in said bulb, substantially as shown and described.
