@glitten tats @anni @ffice STEPHEN M. WIRTS AND FRANK SWIFT, 0F HUDSON, MICHIGAN. Letters Patent No. 67,622, dated August 6, 1867.
COMBINED LANTERN AND FOOT-WARMER.
T0 ALL lvl-IOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, S. M. WIRTS and F. SWIFT, of Hudson, in the county of Lenawee, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Lanterns and Foot-Warmers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents a box or case, which is provided with permanent ends and bottom and top, and with two sides, B and C, whichv are hinged at their bottoms tov said case or box. These sides open outwards, and are provided with suitable catches to hold them in position when closed up. The door or side B is provided with an opening, in which a transparent panel, b', is placed and secured. Within the box A is secured a metallic case, I. This case is simply a metallic box, with one movable or adjustable side and without ends, said box being fitted in the case A, so 'that thefends of said case answer as ends for the box I. The Vcase I is provided with a cloth lining, J, on its top, stationaryside,.b0ttom,
and movable or adjustable side It, being permanently attached to the upper or outer end of saidside R, as seen in iig. 1. R is only a side of the case I, when the door or side C is closed, being permanently attached to said door C. a represents a metallic plate with a hook, af, attached to it, which said hook attaches or'iconnects it to the side or plate R. When the door C is closed up the plate e is pushed into case I and rests upon the bottom of said case, but when the door C is let down, as in red lines, Yfig. 1, said plate a draws out and serves to make a-continuous platform from plate or side R 'to the bottom of case I. H represents a. metallic slide, which fits in ways in the ends of box A, and which passes in from the side of door B, and under the box or case I. A lamp is intended to be placed on the bottom of box A, beneath the centre of case I. The rays of light from the lamp pass through the transparent panel G, and thus form a lantern, while the heat from the lamp, acting vupon the bottom, side, and top of the case I, forms a convenient foot-warmer when the, door C is-let down, 'as shown in red lines, tig. L When the door C is closed up to the slide there are three thicknesses of metal plate between the lamp and the lining ot' thecase I, which prevent said lining from being burnedor scorched. The platesH and a and the bottom of case I become warmed up well, when the-door C is shut up, and thus render the box A serviceable immediately upon lowering side or door C.l The box Avis provided with holes in its end for ventilation, and with an opening in its top, over` which is placed asmall perforated Ametallic box, D, for the purpose of allowing all redundant heat to escape, as well as smoke, Ste., from the lamp. E represents the handle by which the-box A is conveyed about.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is- 1. The arrangement of the box A with case I, lining J', plates H and a, and door C, as constructed, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The door B, as constructed, when arranged in combination with the foregoing, for the purpose of forming a lantern and foot-warmer, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that We claim theforegoing we have hereunto set our hands this 24th day of December, 1866.
