Description

MERWIN & METCALF. Combined Foot Warmer and Reflecting Lamp.
Patented Oct. 2, 1866.

WWW
L. "0 m. Washington. a. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. MERWIN AND CHARLES A. METCALF, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
COMBINED FOOT-WARMER AND REFLECTlNG-LAMP.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,453, dated October 2, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLEs S. MERWIN and CHARLEs A. METCALF, both of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Combined Foot'Warmer and Reflectin g-Lantern and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my invention, taken on the plane of the line a: m of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on the plane of the line 3 9 Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top view.
The nature of our invention consists in so arranging the top plate, on which the feet rest, that the perforations in the inner plate will be alternate to those in the upper plate, whereby the plates will receive the full effect of the heat and yet permit the same to escape for warming purposes.
It also consists in the employment, in a footstove, of a reflector, in combination with a lamp, for throwing the light through an opening in the base of the foot-stove, for the purpose of rendering the article more effective when used as a lantern. v
A designates the box of a foot-stove as well as the case of the lantern, and it may be of any shape suitable for both purposes. The top of this box consists of two plates of metal, a I), set at a short distance apart; and both plates are perforated in such manner that the perforations in the plate a will be alternate to those in the plate I), so as to get the whole benefit of the heat before permitting it to escape from the device.
On a platform, B, arranged to slide in and out of the case A, there is secured a lamp, 0, for heating the plates at b and in front-of this a glass, d, is secured, which is directly in front of the door; and when the door is opened for the purpose of using the device as a lantern the light penetrates through the glass plate.
A reflector, C, is arranged in the rear of the lamp, so as to throw the light out through the doorway of the device, and by the employment of this reflector I produce a reflecting'lantern.
When it is desired to turn the lamp the platform B can be drawn out of the case A and the operation be performed, the lamp being detachable from the said platform for the purpose, and so arranged as to be held so that it will not move out of place when the device is carried around as a lantern.
Oxygen is supplied 'to the light when the door is closed through openings in the sides of the case A.
By our invention we produce a foot-stove whose heating qualities are excellent, and also a reflecting-lantern which, when the door is closed, may be used as a dark-lantern, and, when the door is open, as a reflecting-lantern, capable of throwing quite an intense light in any particular direction.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' 1. The employment, in a combined footstove and lantern, of a reflector, C, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the glass plate d, the lamp 0, and reflector C, substantially as specified.
