Description
Af J. DOOLITTLE,`OF HAMDEN, CONNECTICUT.
- IMPRovED asPlTTooN-ENVIILOPE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 66,3 [3, dated July 2, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
"Be it known that I, A. J.`DooL1TTLE, of Hamden, in the county of New Haven, and in the Stateof Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements `in Spittoon-Envelopes, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making Vpart of this specification, A represents a square box,
made of sufficient width and depth to contain an ordinary spittoon.` This box is provided with a lid, B, which is hinged to it, as represented. A spring, c, consisting of a coil of wire with a projecting end, is secured to the box beneath the lid, so that its projecting end will rest against the said lid, operating against a staple, x, to close it after it has been raised, and also operating against the lid when almost closed, in order to ease it down. a and d represent two levers, which are pivoted to the inside of the box, and connected together by means of `a rod or bar, b. One end of lever a projects outside of the box A through a slot made for it in the side of the box, and is provided with a little foot-pad. One end of lever drests againstthe under side of the lid B, and `serves to throw said lid up when desirable. g representsabrace, secured in the box, one end of which is intended to catch into the notches of a plate secured on theunder sidefof the lid, to keep it open, when it is desired to station it in this position. rl.he box and lid may be covered and padded with any suitable material, so as to form a parlor foot-stool.
A person wishing to use. the spittoon in the box can throw the lid up. by placing his foot upon the pad of lever a and bearing it down. When the foot is removed, the spring c will close the lid, so that the spittoon is hid from view. By the use of this box, the spittoon is not only hid from view, but prevented from turning over and spilling its con` tents.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The spittoon-box A, provided with a hinged cover, B, which is operated by means of the 'spring e and the levers a and d, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claimthe foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of April, 1867,.V
A. J. DooIiITTLE.
