Description
UNITED STATES PHILLIP COHEN, OF
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED TRUNK-LID SUPPORTER.
Speciioation forming `part of Letters Patent No. 81,4177, dated August 25, 1568.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, PEILLIP COHEN, of Ghicago, inthe county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lid-Supporters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.
Figure lis a plan view. Fig. 2 is a detached outside View. Fig. 3 is a detached sectional view from w to x.
Like letters indicate like parts` in each gure.
The nature of this invention is to construct a simple apparatus for holding the lids of trunks, boxes, desks, &c., open at any desired angle, and prevent the same from 4falling either backward or forward.
A is a quadrantbar, its upper end secured to the inside of the cover, by screw or otherwise, and is perforated at intervals, 2. B is a stud with an enlarged head, and passes through from the outside of the trunk or boX, between the enlarged head on the outer end of" the stud and plateE, and surrounding said stud is spiral spring F. The inner end of the stud is provided with screw and thread nuts 3. Between said nuts is loosely sleeved, on the stdu, catch-arm G, which is provided with a rightangular projection at its end, forming a catch.
rlhe lower end of quadrant Ais provided with a right-angular projection, with the `face of the quadrant toward the inside of the trunk. Corresponding with said projection is a projection inward, at the upper end of case D. 4. are guide-screws. Guard-plate H, placed over the mechanism, protects the same from injury.
Having named the various partsof my invention, I will'proceed to explain the working of the same.
Quadrant A, in its movements, is protected by case I), and holds the lid at any required angle by means of the catch projection on arm G, which catches iu the perforations provided for the same in the quadrant-bar. The end of the projecting catch being beveled downward, admitsv of the bar being raised, while it catches in its downward motion, holding the lid as described. To release the catch, press inward on the outside enlarged head, thereby releasing the catch G, and admitting of the free passage of the quadrant-bar.
Guidescrews 4 serve to keep the quadrant in position, while the right-angular projection at its end, with similar projection on the inside of case D, serves to prevent the lid from falling back, by coming in contact with each other when the trunk is opened.
`By the action of spring F, the arm-catch is kept in contact with the quadrant-plate, in position to enter the perforations 2, is automatic in its operation, and subject to the will of the operator, the whole forming a convenient device for the purposes described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Stud B, spring F, hook-arm G, all operating substantially as described and set forth.
2. Quadrant-bar A, provided with perforations 2, when operating in connection with case D, substantially as set forth and shown.
PHILLIP COHEN.
