HERBERT E. SMITH, OF RIVERSIDE, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR HOLD ING RAILWAY SIGNAL APPLIANCES.
SPECIFICATION forming" part Of Application filed April 17, 1901.
To ctZZ 2072/0712, zit may concern:
Be it known that LHERBERT E. Snrrma citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Railway Signal Appliances; and'I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved de vice for holding railway signal appliances, the object of the invention being the production of a simply-constructed fireproof case adapted to be readily and, if desired, permanently secured to a car-wall or other upright and to hold the appliances isolated one from the other and in a manner to afford easy access.
The details of construction of my improved device will be readily comprehended, reference being had to the following detailed description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved case. Fig. 2 is a similar view with certain parts in a different position.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 denotes the case, constructed, preferably, of sheet metal to be fireproof and provided with a back 2, sides 3 3, a base-piece 4t, and a top piece 5. The back is provided with holes, whereby the case is attached permanently to the car-wall or other upright. In the case, at
one side, is a receptacle 6 for torpedoes, and at the other side is a match-box 7, having a hinged lid 8. The base-piece preferably forms the bottom of the receptacle and box, an d said Letters Patent No. 675,576, dated June 4, 1901.
Serial No, 56,208. (No model.)
base-piece, between the box and receptacle, is provided with a plurality of holes 9 9, which receive in practice the lower ends of fusees. In the top piece 5 are openings 10 10 in line with and relatively larger than the base-openings 9 9 and which receive the large upper ends of the fusees. The height of the case is such that the upperor lighting ends of the fusees project above the top piece, so that said ends are isolated from the matches, and the danger of fire is thereby lessened. As a further safeguard a cover 11 is hinged to the outer side of the top piece to swing over the projecting ends of the fusees to inclose them, the closed position of the cover being shown in Fig. 1. The cover being raised, the fusees are withdrawn singly, as will be understood.
The lid of the match-box is self-closing,so that the contents are exposed only when the lid is raised by hand.
I claim as my invention A fireproof holder for railway signal app1iances, comprising an open-front casing adapted to be permanently secured to a wall or other upright, the base-piece of the casing being provided between its end portions with holes to receive the lower ends of fusees, and the top piece thereof having relatively larger openings to receive the upper ends of the fusees, a cover hinged exterior-1y to the top piece and extending when lowered over the open= ings in the top piece to protect the lighting ends of the fusees, and a receptacle for-tor pedoes and a match-receptacle within the casing at opposite sides thereof beyond the openings in the base-piece.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT E. SMITH.
