HENRY A. FOLLET'I AND AMOS FOLLE'UL OF SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND. Lam Patent ivo. 61,521, dated Airy-me, 1867.
IMPRGVED BED-BOTTOM.
@Tlf Stintino ruimt it in this trltrts ntrnt mit making pint nf 1hr simu.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, HENRY A. FOLLETT und ANOS FOLLETT, of Central Falls, (Slnithijelth) in the county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BedBott-oms; and'we do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings making a part of the saine, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure 1 is a top view, and
Figure 2 is a side view of a bedsteadwith the improvement attached.
Figure is'a top view of the series of bottom springfbar slats.
Figure 4 is a. side view of the series of top slats or gridiron-s'lat frame resting upon the spring-bar slats and supporting the mattress.
Our invention consists in the use of two independent sets f slats, so arranged that each slat shall constitute a spring-board," the slats of each set being disposed alternately with the slats of the other set; the spring ends of one set being.;l at the head, and those of the other setr at the -foot of the bedstead; and also in combining,r with such spring-slats an ordinary Slat-frame or other supportkfor .the bed mattress.
In the drawings, A represents a. bedstead of well-knownA forni and construction. The slats e ande', fig. 2, which are to compose the bottom, instead of resting at their ends in notches cut in the foot and head-rails of the bedstead, are dividedinto two sets, and so spaced that the slats ofthe two sets, when arranged as presently to be described, will alternate with each other, and inthe aggregate occupy, with theusual allowance for spaces,
the distance between the side rails of the bedstead. The slats of eachset are fitted at one end to enter niortises cut in the head and foot-rails a b at distances corresponding with the distances'of the slats apartflaut their other ends are without anysupport'whatcvcr from the frame of'the bedstead. Midway, or thereabouts, -between the head and foot-rails of the bedstead is placed a strong transverse rail, B', upon the top surface of which the slats Vof each set rest. Near the ,springing ends of the slats, and upon their top surfaces, is `secured a block of wood, c, Whose thickness should be greater than the probable length of the sine of the angle of deection of the slats, due to the expected weight to be placed upon them. A` transverseslat, d, is for convenience nailed to the blocks c o' each set of slats respectively, and thus eacli'set of slats is connected. They are thus to be arranged, so that the springing ends of one set shall be at the head, and those of the other at the foot of the bedstead. Resting upon the transverse slats d of this spring-bottom, so constructed, is laid a gridiron-slat frame, C, upon which the hed-mattress is to be placed.
It is quite evident from the foregoing description that the slats of each set constitute so many springboards which support the gridiron-frame C, the mattress, and the weight'of the occupants of thebed. All the parts are readily removable, and whenever, from long use, the spring-boards have become bent and lose their elasticity hot-h sets can, in a few moments of time, be turned over.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bed-bottom composed ot' two sets of spring-bars e e in alternation, one end of the bars of each'set being held fast, and the other end left free to spring, and arranged so that one-half, or nearly so, of such bars will have their springing ends at the head, and the residue at thc foot of the bedstead, all of4 such hars being combined with a transverse rail, B, or other suitable fixed support for the same, the improvement being suhstantially as herein described.
2. A bed-bottom, constructed and. arranged as above described, in combination with a slat-fran'ie` C, or-
other proper support for the mattress, substantially as described.
HENRY A. FOLLETT, AMOS FOLLETT.
