HENRY E. YOUNG, OF ROANOKE, INDIANA.
FARM-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,894, dated May 28, 1901.
Application led July 23, 1900.
T0 cir/ZZ wwwt it 11m/y concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing atRoanoke, in the county of Huntington, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in farm-gates.
The object of the invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and substantial gate of the character mentioned and one which is especially adapted for use in interior fences for the separation of stock, but also designed for other ordinary farm purposes.
To this end the invention consists in a swinging frame formed of a movable pivoted upright post, a pivoted diagonal brace, and a horizontal stay-rod connecting the upper ends of said post and brace, combined with a gate suspended from the forward end of the frame and a detachable rod adapted to connect the upper end of the diagonal brace to either the forward end of the gate or the bottom portion thereof, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side eleva-tion of a gate embodying the herein-described invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly broken away, of another form of gate. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View, on an enlarged scale, of the upper end of the diagonal brace, showing the manner of connecting thereto the adjacent ends of the stay and locking rods.
The gate-frame is formed of the horizontal boards l, in parallel arrangement, secured'to the upright cross-pieces 2 at the ends and midway of the ends thereof in the usual manner and provided with proper xed posts 3. On the inner face of one of the said posts are arranged suitable pivot-hinges 4, on which the pivoted post 5 is mounted by means of the apertured horizontal plates 6 on the ends thereof. The diagonal brace 7 has its lower Serial No. 212.495. (No model.)
end provided with a vertical opening for the admission of the lower one of the said hinges 4L, on which the said brace is pivotally supported. The upper end of the said brace is apertured to loosely admit the screw-threaded forward end of the stay-rod 8 and is secured therein by means of a nut 9. The other end of the rod is so folded upon itself as to form an eye and is then loosely mounted on the upper one of the said hinges 4c. This rod S thus stays and Iirmly secures the upper end of said brace, from which the gate-frame is supported. The distance between the upper end of the said post 5 and the upper end of the said brace can, to a limited extent, be lengthened or shortened by adjust-ing the nut 9, thereby slightly raising or lowering the gate-frame.
In the top of the brace 7 is rigidly fixed a loop or eye I5, Fig. 3, on which is mounted a ring 16, and in this ring 16 is loosely arranged the hooked end 17 of av locking-rod 14, the other hooked end of which is adapted to be detachably connected in the staples I8 or I9, arranged, respectively, at the outer end and bottom portions of the gate l. When connected to the staple 19, the rod 14 secures the gate l against vertical displacement by stock and atthe same ti me forms a pivotal point between the ends of the gate, upon which the latter may swing independently of the hinges 4; but should it be desired the post 5 may be dispensed with, and in this event the rod 14: will be permanently hooked in the staple 19, as shown in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the herein-described invention provides a gate which is cheap, simple, efficient in use, and reliable in operation and one which is reduced to a minimum number of parts. It will also be understood, however, that the invention is susceptible of various changes, and the right is therefore reserved to modify or vary the invention as falls within the spirit and scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The combination in a farm-gate of a swinging frame formed of a removable pivoted upright post, a pivoted diagonal piece, and a horizontal stay-rod connecting the up- IOO 1o as shown; a gate suspended from said frame;
and a Vertical locking-rod connecting the top of said frame with the bottom of the gate.
Signed by me at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, this 14th day of July, A. D. 1900.
HENRY E. YOUNG.
