Description

Patented May 2|, I90l. 8.: BRAY.
L E G GIN G.
(Applicatim; filed Sept. 8, 1900-) (No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE,
SAMUEL BRAY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LEGGING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 674,726, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed September 8, 1900. Serial No. 29,422. (No model.)
To all whom, it TIl/Cby concern:
Beit known that I, SAMUEL BRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a legging with a strapfastening which will have the effect of a continuous coil from the bottom to the top of the legging and which willallow the-legging to be quickly attached to and detached from the leg.
I-Ieretofore in leggings in which long straps were used to fasten the legging to the leg the straps had to be laced through one or more loops in order to hold the straps in position on the leg,and consequently the legging could not be quickly attached to or detached from the leg, which is very essential.
By my invention the loops are dispensed with and as soon as the straps are unbuckled the legging is free. Furthermore, by my invention I economize in the use of leather for the strap, using two short sectionsin the most economical manner.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one side of my improved legging. Fig. 2 is a' perspective view showing the front of the legging illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of my improved legging supplied with an extra strap at the upper end, and Fig. 4. is a view of one form of alining device.
A is a legging, made in the present instance of leather shaped to fit the calf of the wearer, having the lower edge rounded at the front to fit the shoe. The legging extends to a point below the knee and one edge of the legging overlaps the other edge, as clearly shown in the drawings.
A strap B is secured to the outer surface of the overlapping portion of the legging at 00 and near the bottom thereof, and this strap is coiled once around the legging and secured to a buckle D, attached to the underlapping portion of the legging about midway between the top and the bottom. A strap E forms a continuation of the strap B, being secured to the legging at e and coiled around the leggingin the same direction as the strap B. The strap may be secured also ate and is attached to a buckle F near the top, the buckle being secured to the underlapping portion of the legging, as shown.
The buckle D is confined to the legging by a continuation of the strap E, thus insuring the alinement of the two, straps B and E, to give the effect of a single strap. The ordinary keepers'ld may be used at the buckles, if desired.
A plate a may be secured to one edge of the legging and arranged to enter a pocket a in the opposite edge, as in Fig. 5, to prevent any independent vertical movement of the edges of the legging, and in some -instances a short strap E may be used with a buckle F at the top of the legging to keep the two edges in alinement.
By attaching the straps B and E to the outside of the legging, as shown, the overlapping edges aneheld tightly together, preventing dirt from working its Way between the edges, as in other leggings now on the market.
By arranging the straps in the manner set forth, so that one strap forms a continuation of the other, not only does the legging appear neat, but short straps can be economically used and attached at the two points desired. When the straps are unbuckled, the legging is free to be removed from the leg Without having to pass the straps through supporting-loops.
I claim as my invention- A legging having one edge overlapping the other, a strap secured to the outer face of the overlapping portion near the bottom, a second strap secured to the underlapping portion of the legging near the center, a buckle at the point where the second strap is secured to the legging for engagement with the firstmentioned strap, and a buckle secured to the underlapping portion of the legging at the top and engaging with the second strap so that the two straps will have the effect of a continuous coil from the bottom to the top of the legging, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL BRAY.
