Be it known that I, ANNA M. BEVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Ayr, in the county of Ringgold and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Hygienic Handkerchief Pocket or Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a hygienic handkerchief pocket or receptacle.

The object of the invention is to provide a construction and arrangement which is simple and efiicient and economical in manufacture to serve the purpose of a handkerchief holder, pocket, or receptacle for hygienic and sanitary purposes. 7

The invention consists, substantially,in the construction, combination, location, and arrangement, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown in the accompanying drawings, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings and to the various views and reference-signs appearing thereon, Figure l is a View in perspective, parts being broken out, of a pocket or receptacle embodying the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in section of the same, showing in dotted lines the open posi tion of the holder or pocket. Fig. 3 is a broken detail view in section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. A'is a side elevation showing a slightly modified arrangement and embraced within the scope of my invention.

The same part is designated by the same reference-sign wherever it occurs throughout the several views.

In carrying out my invention I propose to employ handkerchiefs or similar articles of economical material which when once used may be destroyed, and the special purpose of my invention is to provide a holder or receptacle in which the handkerchiefs or the like may be carried in quantity and when desired for use they are separately extracted or removed from the holder containing the same and when used are placed within a chamber or receptacle and retained therein until they can be conveniently destroyed or burned, the purpose being to avoid distributing disease germs or microbes by negligent or incautious expectoration or use of handkerchiefs and the like by persons sufiering from infectious or other similar diseases.

The cover or part .0 may be hinged or pivoted to the base part A in any suitable or convenient manner and at either the top or bottom edges thereof. In Fig. 2 I have shown said hinged cover or part pivoted to the base A at a point adjacent tothe mouth of the receptacle or recess formed in the base A,and, if desired, a suitable spring F may be employed, the tension of which is constantlyexerted to hold the hinged cover or part 0 in open relation with respect to the base A, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The bounding edge of the hinged top'or cover 0 should be so formed and constructed as to fit neatly and tightly over or within the edge of the base part A when said hinged part Cis boundingedge of the hinged part or cover 0- and adapted to snap over a projection or rib on the base part A. I desire it to be understood, however, that the hinged top or cover C may be held in closed relation in many other specifically diiferent ways, and I do not desire, therefore, to be limited or restricted in respect of this feature.

The hinged top or cover 0 is provided with an opening therein, as indicated at H, by which when said hinged part is closed upon the base A the handkerchief when used may be introduced into the chamber or receptacle E. A suitably-hinged flap J is employed to normally close the opening H, a spring K serving to maintain said flap closed. This flap may be hinged at either edge, as may be found convenient; or desirable. I have shown said flap hinged at its upper-edge as the best arrangement embodying the principles of my invention.

In Fig. f I have shown a slightly-modified arrangement wherein the hinged cover or part G instead of being hinged adjacent to the mouth or opening of the receptacle or pocket in which the fresh handkerchiefs are carried said part is hinged at some distance away from said point, as clearly shown.

The operation of the pocket or holder above described will be readily understood. When it is desired to use a handkerchief or the like, one of the handkerchiefs B is withdrawn or removed from the chamber or recess in the base A in which the fresh handkerchiefs are carried and after being used is deposited in the chamber or receptacle E through the flapcovered opening H. In this manner the handkerchiefs may be used and deposited in the chamber or receptacle E until a convenient opportunity presents itself for opening the hinged top or cover 0 to permit the used handkerchiefs to be thrown into the fire or otherwise treated or destroyed, as may be desired, and the holder as a whole may be suitably disinfected by sterilizing the same with hot water, steam, or otherwise, as may be suitable or convenient.

The hygienic handkerchief holder or receptacle embodying the principles of the construction above set forth may be made of any suitable material-such, for instance, as aluminium-and may be carried in the pocket of the user and secured therein by buttons, pins, or otherwise, or, if desired, may form an attachment for a belt. In Fig. 2 I have shown the base A provided with a holder device L for the reception of a belt, and in Fig. 4 I have shown at M how the device may be suspended by chains or cords and the like from a belt in the form of a pendant in the same manner in which porte-monnaies, shopping-bags, and the like are now worn. I desire it to be understood, however, that the particular form or manner of support or fastening device for the handkerchief holder or receptacle is unimportant so far as the present invention is concerned and may be vapossible or inconvenient to disinfect, thus transporting means of contagious infection.

Many variations in the details of construction and arrangement would readily suggest themselves to persons skilled in the art and still fall Within the spirit and scope of myinvention. I do not desire, therefore, to be limited or restricted to the exact details of construction shown and described; but,

Having now set forth the object and nature of my invention and a construction embodying the principles thereof, what I claim as new and'useful and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. A hygienic or sanitary handkerchief holder or pocket, a base portion provided with a chamber or recess adapted to receive the fresh handkerchiefs or the like, and a top 01' cover hinged or pivoted to said base portion and forming therewith a receptacle capable of being opened and adapted to receive the handkerchiefs or the like when used, said hinged top or cover having an opening therethrough and a spring-flap for normally closing said opening, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A hygienic or sanitary handkerchief pocket or holder, comprising a base portion cle and also provided with an opening therethrough and a spring-flap for normally closing said opening, said base portion provided witha recess or chamber, and means for bolding said top or cover in closed relation with respect to said base portion, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A hygienic handkerchief pocket or receptacle, comprising a base portion and a top or cover hinged thereto, said top or cover provided with a protruding or projecting part, and cooperating with said base portion to form a receptacle, said protruding or projecting part provided with an opening therethrough and a spring-flap for normally closing said opening, means for holding said hinged top or cover in closed relation with respect to said base portion to form said receptacle, said base portion provided with a pocket or recess adapted to receive the fresh handkerchiefs, as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A hygienic or sanitary handkerchief holder or pocket, comprising a base portion and a top or cover hinged or pivoted thereto and cooperating therewith to form a receptacle, said top or cover provided with an opening to permit handkerchiefs when used to be deposited in said receptacle, said base portion provided with a pocket or recess adapted to receive and contain the fresh handkerchiefs, and aspring-flap arranged to normally close the opening in said top or cover, as and for the purpose set forth. 5. A hygienic or sanitary handkerchief holder or pocket, comprising a base portion, atop or cover hingedor pivoted thereto and cooperating therewith'to form a receptacle,

6. A hygienic handkerchief pocket or holder, comprising a base portion having a chamber or recess formed therein, a top or cover arranged to be applied to said base portion, and cooperating therewith to form arecept-acle,means normally tending to move said top or cover 'to open position with respect to said base portion, means for holding said top or cover in closed relation with respect to said base portion, said base portion provided with a pocket or recess,'said top or cover provided with an opening for permitting access to the receptacle formed by the cover and base portion, a spring-flap hinged to said top or cover to open inwardly into said receptacle for normally closing the opening through said hinged top or cover, as and for the purpose set forth.
