FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 673,484, dated May '7, 1901.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM LEASURE SOLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belle Vernon, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Fences, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to fences, and particularly to what are known as Wire and picket fences; and the object thereof is to provide improved metal posts adapted for use in building fences of this class and with which the wires of a wire fence or the picketrailings of a picket fence may be quickly and easily connected. A

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation showing two of my improved fence-posts and showing also the method of connecting the wires of a wire fence and the railings of a picket fence therewith, and Fig. 2 a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.

In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a hollow tubular post 5, two of which are shown in Fig. l, and I have also shown at 6 in Fig. l the wires of a wire fence and at 7 Vthe railings of a picket fence.

For the purpose of connecting the wires 6 with the posts 5 IY form in one side of said posts transverse slots or openings 8, each of which is provided at its opposite ends with a downwardly-directed slot or opening 9, at the lower end of each of which is a backwardlydirected recess 10, and formed transversely of each of the transverse slots or openings-8 is a vertically-arranged slot or opening 1l.

The vertically-arranged slots or openings l1, which bisect the transverse slots or openings 8, are designed to admit of the passage of the barbs or spurs of the wire in inserting the wires into position, and in order to do this the wires 6 are passed into the transverse slots or openings 8, then downwardly through the vertical slots or openings 9, which communicate therewith and into the recesses lO, as clearly shown in the drawings.

The wires 6 are not provided in the drawings with thc barbs or spurs; but it will be understood that when so provided one of said barbs or spurs is passed through one of the vertically-arranged slots or openings l1, and this construction serves to hold the wires within the post and prevent them from moving longitudinally. The vertically-arranged transverse slots or openings 11, however, are not absolutely necessary, as the wires will securely remain in position after being once passed into the notches or recesses ll. 'Y I have also shown means for holding the railing 7 of the picket fence in place or connecting the same with the post 5, and for this purpose I provide box-shaped brackets l2, provided at one side with a projecting neck 13, having a transverse head le, and the posts 5 are provided with holes 15, which are longer one way than the other and which are shown in dotted lines in Fig. l and in full lines in Fig. 2, and in practice the heads le on the necks 13 of the brackets l2 are passed through the holes l5 and then turned horizontally or into the position shown in Fig. 1. This operation securely fastens the brackets in connection with the posts, and the railings 7 are passed thereinto or therethrough, and the pickets 16 are secured to said railings in the usual manner.

My improved fence-post is simple in construction and comparativelyinexpensive, and

1 by means thereof either a wire or picket fence may be quickly and easily constructed, and, if desired, both the wires and the pickets may be used in the same fence.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A tubular fence-post provided at one side with a plurality of pairs of vertically-arrangedy openings connected by a transverse opening and provided at the lower ends with transverse notches or recesses, whereby the wires of a wire fence may be connected with said post, said transverse openings being also bisected by vertically-arranged openings, substantially as shown and described.
