MARTHA BEATRICE MOSHER, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAT-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 672,708, dated April 23, 1901.
Application filed March 17, 1900- erial No. 9,061. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTHA BEATRICE MOSHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an improved hat-fastener of that class in which pins are mounted in guides on the hat, so that they may be slid in and out to engage and disengage the hair of the head and to hold the hat in place when so engaged.
This specification is the disclosure "of one form of the invention, While the claim defines the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention in use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the device detached from the hat. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the blank plate from which the casing of the guide is formed, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the pin by which the guide is fastened to the hat.
Referring to Fig. 1, the hair-pins a may be of any desired construction, comprising the two parallel arms connected together to form the pin and having enlarged or flattened end portions to prevent them from being displaced from the guides b, which are fastened to opposite sides of the hat, so as to hold the pins slidably thereon, permitting them to be moved in and out in the usual manner.
The guide comprises a metallic-plate 10, the end portions 11 of which are reduced in width and rolled outward to form the eyes, as shown in Fig. 2, through which eyes the arms of the hair-pin a are passed, so that they may be moved freely therein. The side portions of the plate 10 are turned outward, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to form the plate into essentially a flat tube or casing, wherein is held the ser pentine back 12 of a pin 14 for fastening the guide to the hat. This back portion 12 is made serpentine, so that it will lie flat in the casing formed by the plate 10 and will be held therein without the necessity of solder or other similar means. One end of the back 12 is coiled to produce a spring 15, from which extends a pin 14, and the other end of the back is rebent to produce a hook 16, to be engaged with the free end of the pin. The guide is fastened to the hat by the pin 14 in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A hat-fastener, having a pin-guide comprising a body portion formed of a metallic plate, the end portions of which are bent to form eyes loosely receiving the pin to hold the same and the side portions of which plate are turned inward so as to form the plate into an essentially flat tube or casing, and a pin for fastening the body portion to the hat, the pin having a bent or serpentine back secured in the said flat tube or casing, one end of the back of the pin being projected from the easing to form the pin proper and the other end being projected from the casing to form a keeper for the pin proper.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
