IMPROVEMENT IN ORNAMENTAL HAT-BANDS.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,605, dated October 14, 1879; application filed September 17, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARCUS GOLDBERG, of

the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ornamental Hat-Band, of which the following is a specication.

Figure l is a perspective view of my improved hat-band. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a part of the band enlarged. Fig. 3 is a crosssection of the band, taken through the line :c cc, Fig. 1,` part of the clasp being removed. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line y y, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts The object of this invention is to furnish ornamental hat-bands so constructed that they may be expanded to place them upon the hat, and to adapt them to be placed upon differentsized hats and to contract to tit the hat snugly.

The invention consists in a hat-band formed of two or more spiral springs, placed one upon the other, and held in place by metal clasps, and also in the combination, with the said springs and clasps, of tapes or cords, so that the band can be placed upon different-sized hats, but cannot be expanded so much as to injure the elasticity of the springs, as will be hereinafter fully described. l

A is a set of two, three, or more spiral springs, placed one above the other, and secured in place by metal clasps or slides B. The spiral springs A may be made of gold or silver, or of a baser metal plated or Washed with gold or silver. The springs Aare connected at their ends by being secured in pairs to a small piece of sheet metal, C, or in any other convenient Way. The springs A are kept from being expanded so much as to destroy or injure their elasticity by having tapes or cords D passed through them, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

The clasps B may be made of one or more pieces, as may be desired,and their faces may be ornamented with raised work or other ornamentation, as may be desired.

Any desired number of clasps B may be used, but I prefer to use four-two narrow ones in front and rear and two wider ones at the sides, as shown in Fig. 1.

The clasps B are so arranged as to cover the end connections of thc springs A.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. As an improved article of manufacture, a hat-band constructed of two or more spiral springs, A, placed one above the other, and secured in place by metal clasps or slides B, substantially as herein shown and described, so that the band may be applied to differentsized hats, as set forth.

2. In a hat-band, the combination, with the spiral springs A and the clasps B, of the tapes or cords D, substantially as herein shown and described, to limit the expansion of the springs A, and thus preserve their elasticity, as set forth.
