Be it known-that I, GEETEUDE DUNLEA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tape-Measures; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to tape-measures, and more particularly to an attachment for the end thereof which will secure a tape-line to a buttonhole, belt, or other convenient part of a persons apparel, whereby the tape will always be convenient and ready at hand, a very important and valuable desideratum to a salesman or other person making frequent use of such a measure;

The object, therefore, of my invention is to provide a convenient form of securing device, preferably in the form of a hook for the end of the tape-measure, whereby such measure may be conveniently secured, as by hooking over the belt, and as readily removed therefrom when desired for use,thereby in no wise detracting from the usefulness of the tapemeasure.

Other objects and advantages will be made clearly apparent from the following specification considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a blank, preferably of sheet metal, from which my hook or securing device is formed. Fig. 2 shows a second step in the process of forming the securing device for my tape-measure. Fig. 3 shows an additional step in the formation of the securing device, the dotted lines indicating the final position in which the ends of the blank are shaped. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view showing my complete hook and end of'a tapemeasure opened ready to receive the body portion of the hook. Fig. 5 is a similar view to that presented in Fig. 4, except that the parts are shown as united together. Fig. 6 shows a modified construction which may be adopted, if desired; and Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing a hook as formed by bending the blank shown in Fig. 1 back upon itself.

In order to conveniently refer to the various details of my invention and accessories deemed necessary to coperate therewith, numerals will be employed, the same numeral referring to a similar part throughout the several views.

Briefiy stated, myinvention consists in providing a simple form of hook attached to the end of a tape-measure, though both ends may be similarly provided, if deemed desirable.

In the present instance I have provided, as will be seen by reference to the drawings, a special form of hook shaped to form the body portion 1 and the hooked terminals 2 and 3, a plurality of apertures 4 being formed in the body portion 1, whereby said body portion may be anchored in its operative position and secured between the separated ends 5 and 6 of the tape-measure.

The body of the tape-measure, as indicated by the numeral 7, is preferably graduated, as is common, and as will be shownin Fig. 5 a hooked extension of the body portion l is provided upon each side of the tape-measu re, whereby it maybe easily secured in position upon some part of the apparel, as by hooking one of the terminals 2 or 3 into a buttonhole or over the belt.

My anchoring-hook for tape-measures, it will be observed, may be very cheaply mannfactured, as by stamping the same from a single piece of sheet metal, which thus provides the two hooked terminals, as well as the body portion, by means of which latter the securing device is secured in place upon the end of the tape-measure proper.

I prefer to so bend the hooked terminals 2 and 3 that the free ends will be curved slightly outward, whereby they may be more readily entered in place, as over the edge of a belt,

'as hereinbefore set forth.

In Fig. 6 I have shown a slightly-modified form of construction for the hook, wherein it will be observed that I have provided a body portion 8, corresponding to the body portion l in the other views, said body portion also having a plurality of apertures whereby it may be sewed to the end of the tape-measure. The body portion 8 is provided with the curved terminal 9, which latter is hinged to the hook member proper, l0, as indicated by the numeral 11. The body portion 8 is also provided with the extension or lip 12, while the hook `member l0 is provided with the correspending extension 13, said lips or extensions l2 and 13 having disposed between them the spring 14E, designed to hold the free end of the hook member 10 normally against the body portion l or in a closed position.

Believing that the advantages and manner of using my improved attachment for tapemeasures, Snc., have thus been made clearly v apparent, further description is deemed un- What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination with a tape-measure of a hook member having a body portion; means to secure said member to the tape; a hooked terminal 3 formed by bending the free end of said hook member back upon itself and a hooked terminal 2 stamped out of the terminal 3 and also bent to form a hook, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. As an article of manufacture, a blank piece of material having a portion of its snrface at one end stamped out and bent to form a hook, the remainder of said end being differently bent to form a second hook and means to secure it to a tape-measure or the like, as and for the purpose set forth.
