TOIALL- WHO-M I r MAY'eoNoEnNf- -Be it known that I. WiLLIAM BROWSI, late of Springfield, .Mnssachusetts, now of thecity, count.y a.i'id State of New York, have invent-eil new and useful improvements upon the CombinedCzirpet-StretchernndTuck;
Driver described'nnd patented in Letters Patent of' the UnitedStates granted and issued@ me, (lated Februury 5, 1867, :tnd'numbered 61303; and that the following is u i'ull, true, und exnct description ofmysad improvements` reference being hznl to the drawings uccompanying'nzul making part ofnthis my specilicntion. .s
Figure I of' the drawings represents et side elevation of my improved carpetfstretcher and tackdriver. .Figure II represents n. verticnl cross-section through the centre of the, part s reprgesented in FigiI. LA: Figure III is an emlielevntion of the vertical part erh-allow column shown in Figs'.I IlaudII. i
In all the igures the snm-e letters represent the sume parts. i
Inmy Letters Patent above referred to the handle A and the shaft B are'described-as.resembling in `enter;-` 'nnlnppearancethe carpet-stretcher in common use, and the port-s constituting and operating' as 'the tack-driver are arranged within theliollow part or handle A and shaft B, und the tuck-conductpr is 'a hollow tube, D, placed Y upon and secured to shaft B. This'nrrangement, though operating'well, renders necessary a change-in vthe instrument from an inclined 'to nearly -a vertical positional: the moment oldrivingfthe tack, and in .order to",-
insert the tack into the carpet'and floor in a vertical position. To avoid this inconvenience vI now, in my present r'pronrement, plucetl'ie purtsf'er driving the took,l undv the tube orhollow. column-for containing them, in it ver'. tical position, and the part. constituting the c`nrpet-stretcher in theiizclined position requiredffor use,` thetwol being inserted und c cmbinedso ns to form one instrument, in manner following, to wit:4
v'.lhe handle A and shi't-B `are,` :it the lower extremity ofhaft B, firmly" unitedito the vertical tube or column D et u point just above'wh-erc the plunger meets the opening inthe'jaws, Figs. I and II, ns'shown at b d.
\ The teeth forseizng andholdi'ng the carpet nre placed at tho lower extremity of the vertical tube D. The
plunger or teck-driver E, 'the spring H, the jnws G insec`tions,' 'andthe mnnner' of their operating. ure all fully described in my aforesaid Letters :'u.tent, to which reference is hereirnmade,'and'need--hot be more'p'articularly. described here. The tackconductor C in my present improred instrumcntis'a `metallic tube, placed upon the.
shaft B, and opens at its lowerend into n'. tube, b d, in the cest-iron connecting fixture, through which the tack A-is carried into the tube'D, just over the jaws G. The cord L with its knob orhndleK, is now arranged so as to adapt it to the change in the other parts, by carryingthe cord under pulleys alongthc side ofshai't B', thence to the'top of tube D, where it passes orer a. pulley fixed upon-the head of tube D, down to the bottom' of spring H, where it is fustenctl to the head of the plunger-E. The`tack-conducting tuhe mayfbe'construeted of n borc through handle and shaft B, .but Ifdo not regard thisas' so goed on arrangement as the 'exterior Y metallietubejustdescribed; with a solid handle and shaft.
The manneref using and operating -my improved Acarpet-stretcher und tack-driver is to catch -the carpet bythe teeth and push it to its place, dropping the tack point downwurdinto the open enduof the tack-conductor `C, andthen, on drawing the plunger up by the cord, the tuck' fallsl .into the jatwswhcn,.on letting free the' cord, the tack is driven by' the recoil of the spring andthe plunger home into the floor.
What I now cla-im as my invention and improvement is- 1. The combination of the inclined carpet-stretcher withthe 'vertical column and tnclidri'ving apparatus, arranged and operating in the nmnner and for the purposes described.
2. The combination of thetnek-conducting tube and the cord and pulleys with the inclined shaft eudwrerti-A c al column, arranged and operating in the manner and for the purposes'described.
WILLIAM BRowN.
