ARCHIBALD PUTNAM, oF owEGo, New Youn. Letters Patent No. 89,072, lated April 20, 1869.
MROVEMENT IN SEEDING-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the came.
plate, and is held up to this position by means of a iiange on its periphery, tig. 4. t
The circular' recess or channel, for carrying the grain, has indentations, c cc, figs. 2 and 4. This form I use because it is not so liable to break coarse grain.
The hole in the centre of distributing-wheel has a. projection fit-ting. in a groove or grooves in the rod O, tigs. 1, f2, and 3.
This rod does not extend through, and have a gear upon it, as in other machines, but is divided at the clutch n, iig. 1.
The left en( of thc rod O is attached to a lever, d, fig. l, one end of which moves on a fulcrum. The end is formed as an incline, and is moved by a corresponding incline attached to lifting-shattb.
The motion of *the shaft l), figs. 1 and 5, so Works the inclines together that the shaft O moves laterally, thereby disengaging the clutch n, and simultaneously stopping the feed-runs with the lifting of the hoes or teeth; and, when the hoes or lteeth are lowered, the clutch engages, 'and the feed-runs start.
The lifting-shaft b is provided with a sheave or pulley, or segment of either, of suticient length to carry a chain, which extends to the lever, forward of the grain-box, by which the teeth are raised, or lowered by the operator, while sitting on the box, instead of being obliged to raise them in rear of the machine.
1 AWhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The face-plate E, provided with lugs or ears m m m, for the purpose of fastening to the outside of th'e grain-box, when used in combination with a vertical distributing-wheel, substantially described.
2. The manner of constructing the distributingwheel D, with a flange on its periphery, and indentations in or irregularities upon the bottom of its circular channel or recess, in combination with a round, grooved rod, for giving it motion, substantially as herein set forth.
3. The employment of a clutch, n, grooved sliding rod O, (or their equivalent,) and incline lever cl, divided at the clutch n, for the purpose of stopping and start-V ing the feed-runs simultaneous with the lifting or lowering of the hoes or teeth, substantially as described.

GEO. WoRrHINGToN, i N. W. DAvIs, Jr.
To all who/m it 'may concern Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD PUTXAM, of Owego, in the county of Tioga, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement on a Seeding- Machine; and do hereby decla-re that the following is a full and exact description rf the construct-ion and operation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part oi'this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the machine.
Figure 2 is an elevation oi' the seeding-arrangement, drawn on a large scale, showing side of plate, with its distributing-wheel.
Figure 3,`an elevation, showing rear et ge of plate, with distributing-wheei attached.
Figure 4 is a transverse-vertical section ofthe same parts.
Figure 5 is a section of the seed-box and shaft f or raising the hoes or teeth; also showing the mode of elevating the teeth from the ground.
The same letters of reference refer to like parts.
'lhe nature of my invention consists in turning the distributing-wheels by means of a round shaft having a longitudinal groove or grooves.
The distributing-wheels are provided with projections in the holes, (corresponding with the groove in the rod,) through which the rod passes, thus allowing the rod to pass freely through the wheels, and, by means of the projections in the wheels engaging in the groove in the rod, both revolve together.
My invention further consists in the peculiar construction of the distributing-wheel and face-platen@ which it is L-ttached; also in the manner of raising the hoes or teeth from the ground; and, furthermore, in the mode of starting and stopping the feed-runs, by the operation of raising and lowering the hoes or teeth.
In tig. 1, A is the seed-box, mounted on wheels.
Beneath the box is the seediiig-arrangement, which consists of a face-plate, attached to the box by lugs or ears, lettered m m. on, iigs. 1, 2, and 3.
'lhese lugs are so constructed (as a part of the faceplate) as to admit ot' their being attached to the outside oi' the seed-box, instead of beneath, as in the usual manner, thus making the attachment stronger, and more easily applied or removed.
On the side of the face-plate, opposite the hopper B, is the distributing-wheel D, 2, 3, and 4.
The inner face of this wheel moves close to the face-
