Description

@uitrit gisten @stent @Hina DENNIS .L. FALARDO, or. New vous,l N. Y.
Letters ,Patent No. 65,360, dated Tune 4, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR DRIVING NILS,
ctlge intitule referat tu tu there lfttcrs intent mit nmkiug nrt tt tip 5min.
Be it known that I, DENNIS L. FALARDO, of Cohoes,kAlbany county, State of' New York, haver invented an Improvement upon Machines for .Bradding Mouldings within panel work or for any purposes to which it can be suitably applied; and I declare the following specification, with thc drawings forming part thereof, to be a full and complete description of my invention.
Figure 1 represents the machine in profile, and as applied to its workv Figure 2, the same in plan view.
Figure 3, a sectional central vertical diagram oi the parts of its machinery.
Similar letters denote the same parts'ofthc apparatus.
A is a hollow tube or cylinder, having projecting from one end in the line of its 'axis atlat bar or plate, B, (strengthened by a rib, C, underneath it.) (This bar is pierced in the axial line of the'tube with a passage or bore, D, (soc fig. 3,)'suicieut for the free passage of the brads intended to be driven by the machine. To traverse within this passage there is fitted a steel rod, E, attached to a cross-bar, H, which, sliding within the tube, directs and ste-adios its movement. To the cross-bar is aiiixed another rod, J, lin range with E, and terminated at its outer cud by'a knob, K. Between the cross-bnr H and the outer end or" the tube a spiral spring, L, is fitted, or a pair of them, to retract the bar with the rodsafter they shall have been. driven or pushed down to the end of' the tube. It will be seen from this description that if when the cross-bar with the rod E is drawn up within the tube A., and consequently E nearly withdrawn from tho passage D, abrud be introduced within the passage below therod E,a blow upon the knob K' will propel the brad out of the passage l) and drive it into opposing material. To adapt it to its peculialnwork, of nailing. mouldings into panels, the. tubersmlaced in Van oblique position, (as shown,) resting upon a standard, M,`having a broad foot, N, for its support upon the panel. In the drawing, (iig.J 1,) l) represents in section a panel, 'Q the stile into which it is iitted, and AR the moulding to be nailed in, and into which a brad, S, is represented as being driven by theV machine. To'stcady and guide its movements along the moulding, a gauge, T, is fitted tothe standard M, so las by a set-screw to be adjusted to its proper position.
Machines for driving of brads upon `,this principle of construction have been made, but the modes of supplying brads automatically have not been convenient or ca-paeious enough to make the machine as eilicient as it d should have been.
My invention has reference to the remcdying oi' this defect by furnishing an ample magazine for the brads,
with simple and efficient machinery for operating it. Its construction is-as follows: Upon the plate B a standard,l a, strengthened by a rib, b, supports a circular plate or table, c, of such size as may be most convenient for use with the machine. Over the top of this plate, parallel with-and close to it, a narrow wheel or cylinder, d, revolves upon a spindle, e, which is entered within' a 'socket in the standard. Through the wheel there is cut a set of radial chambers, f, each just sutiicient tof'h'old a brad, which rests upon the surface of plate B, and is moved round upon it by the revolution of the wheel, which 'thus becomes a magazine" holding the brads, the chambers being in number according to its diameter, .Through the rib Z), in the range of the chambers, a slot or passage, as, of same cross-section is made extending down into the passage D, its purpose being to allow the brads as they arrive over it to drop down therein. The apparatus for revolving the wheel consists of a pawl, p, attached to a bar, g, itself attached to a spring, h, within A, which draws the pawi towards A. From cross-bar H a projecting pin or shoulder is fitted, so as toprcss down the spring t as it (H) moves downwards within the tube A. y is a. checl--pawl-v The outer edge of the wheel al is formed into a set of ratchet-teeth, r, into which the pawl operates, the movement of the pawl being 'so graduated that each motion in one dircctiontshall bring one of the ohambcrsfin line with passage :c and drogist-ined nto the chamber .DS
The operation of the machine willbe seen to be thus: The magazine d being supplied with brads, the workman holds the tool or machine in the position shown inig. 1. Itsfoot, N, resting upon the surface of the panel, and its gauge, T, aga-inst the moulding R to be nailed, a brad being in the channel D, he strikes the knob K with a mallet, forcing downthe rod E'with the brad before it, which is at once driven up to its head into the moulding and stil-e. Instantly the rod is withdrawn by the'opcration of the spring L, which, at lthe same time,
by the upward movement of the crossfbar H, permits the spring 71. to' operate the'bar g and pawl e, and move the magazine d until another brad drops into D. The workman meanwhile moves the tool along the moulding to the proper place for the next fustening,'whcn he repeafs the operation described.
By the employment of' a duplicate magazine, to be filled whilst the rst -s in use, the operation of brmlding can be prosecuted without u. moments delay to the operating workman.
What I claim :is my invention, :uid desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
The revolving whecl-resrvor d, formed and fitted as described to the tube A, in combination with the tube and the machinery connected therewith, in the manner :md for the purposes set forthin this specification.
DENNIS L. FALARDO.
